“The sun shall not smite thee
by day, nor the moon by night.
“The Lord shall preserve thee
from all evil: he shall preserve
thy soul.
“The Lord shall preserve thy
going out and thy coming in from
this time forth, and even for ev

After the service, Mr. Parr was
eagertotalk. The worldwide Jew
ish community, he said was “so
embued with the prospect of
peace ... (that)thisisaslapinthe
face.” He has a great admiration
for Minister Rabin. Mainly, he
said, for his efforts to promote
peace. “I could not have shaken
Yasir Arafat’s hand. I know he
didn’t want to.”
In the face of this nation-shat
tering event, the congregation of
the Adas Yeshurun Synagogue
and Congregation Children of
Israel seem to have embraced an
attitude of acceptance. Whether
it is the acceptance that accom
panies defeat, apathy or inner
strength, an outsider can only
speculate. Perhaps Mr. Parr’s
closing words offer a clue. “We
are chosen for greatness,” he said.
“Perhaps we, too, are chosen for
tragedy.”

THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY
WELCOMES YOUR COMMENTS
On November 16, 1995, at the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Convention Center, 640 Broad Street, Augusta,
Georgia, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will hold a public workshop to discuss issues regarding
the draft Disposition of Surplus Highly Enriched Uranium Environmental Impact Statement (HEU EIS). The
DOE Savannah River Site in Aiken, South Carolina is one of the candidate sites for the proposed
disposition of surplus HEU.
The workshop format is intended to be informal to allow the public the opportunity to ask questions,
exchange information with DOE and program representatives, and provide comments. Two identical
workshops are scheduled, one in the afternoon (1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.) and one in the evening (6:00 p.m. -
10:00 p.m.). An exhibit hall, staffed with DOE and program representatives, will be open from 12 noon
until 10:30 p.m. to provide participants additional information on the HEU disposition alternatives.
Preregistration for the public workshops is requested and will be available from October 23, 1995 until
3:00 p.m. EST, November 15, 1995. To preregister by phone, call 1-800-820-5134, Monday through
Friday, between 8 am. and 9 p.m. EST. DOE may need to modify the workshop schedule to
accommodate participants based on preregistration. Should this be the case, DOE will contact the
participants as soon as practical with the revised schedule. Registration will also be available at the
meeting one hour prior to the workshop.
If you are unable to attend the workshop but would like to provide comments, you are encouraged to call
1-800-820-5156 to leave a recorded message or you may provide written comments by accessing the
electronic bulletin board (Internet: (World Wide Web) URL = http://web.fie.com/web/fed/doe/fisl/), faxing
to 1-800-820-5156, or mailing to:

Office of Fissile Materials Disposition
P.O. Box 23786
Washington, D.C. 20026-3786
Comments received by December 11, 1995 will be addressed in the final HEU EIS,
which will be available in February 1996.
