The Historically Black Collegiate Coalition
An advocate
for HBCUs
The Historically Black Collegiate Coali
tion (HBCC) was formed as a subsidiary of
Host Communications in 1994. The objec
tive of HBCC is to develop a coalition of
historically black colleges and to deliver
marketing opportunities at those colleges to
national advertisers — providing them with
a one-stop marketing consortium. In its in
augural year, HBCC was able to develop
marketing representation relationships with
twenty-five historically black colleges and
universities. Through the on-campus pro
motional activities of its corporate partners,
HBCC has provided its member schools with
significant income from national advertis
ing budgets.
Currently twenty-one of the twenty-five
schools are HBCC member institutions in
cluding at least one representative from all
four major historically black college athletic
conferences, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Con
ference (MEAC), Southwestern Athletic
Conference (SWAC), Southern Intercolle
giate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and Cen

Corporate sponsorship boosts fortunes of
only NCAA-backed black college bowl game
In its fifth year, the only NCAA-sanctioned post-season bowl game
between historically black colleges and universities becomes the Jim
Walter Homes Heritage Bowl. The game pits representatives of the
Division I-AA Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and Mid-
Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The Jim Walter Homes Heritage
Bowl will be played Friday, December 29 in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome at
1:00 pm. The game will be televised live on ESPN and broadcast on a
syndicated national radio network.
Jim Walter Homes’ title sponsorship of the Heritage Bowl established
a commitment to support America’s only bowl game between historically
black institutions. Robert Michael, President of Jim Walter Homes, Inc.
said, “All of us at Jim Walter Homes are proud to be a part of this major
bowl game and even more proud to be associated with these two confer
ences of outstanding academic institutions.” ,
A division of Walter Industries, Jim Walter Homes is a Tampa, Florida
based home builder operating in twenty-one states stretching from
Maryland to Arizona. Offering over thirty home models, the nation’s
largest builder of on-your-lot single-family homes focuses on affordable
quality housing and provides a one-stop Ownership Option to the new
home buyer in SWAC and MEAC country.
The HBCC, SWAC and MEAC conference commissioners, as well as the
Heritage Bowl committee, are pleased to announce Jim Walter Homes’
association with this growing and visible event in black college athletics.

Basketball doubleheader
set for Memphis this weekend
Memphis
The 1995 Southern Heritage Classic 2,
featuring LeMoyne-Owen College, South
ern University, Alabama A&M University,
and Tennessee State University, comes to
Memphis December 29-30.
This athletic competion weekend will in
clude a full schedule of events and activities,
much like the annual Southern Heritage
Classic football weekend which takes place
in September.
A “Classic 2” Concert will take place be
fore the games on Friday, Dec. 29 at 8 p.m.,
(CIAA).
This football season HBCC plans to conduct
promotions with four sponsors (Chrysler, Domi
no’s, MCI and First Union xvational Bank) at
twenty-three schools. MCI, promoting its 1-800-
Cullect service, will have the greatest amount of
campus exposure with sponsorship activities at
20 schools. The elements invoh d in the MCI
sponsorship include stadium signage, public ad
dress announcements, message board announce
ments and distribution of coupons worth $9.00 of
free collect calls through the 1-800-Collect ser
vice. Chrysler, Domino’s and First Union will be
conducting similar programs. IIBCC’s newest
corporate partner, the Gillette Company, begins
their involvement with The Jim Walters Heri-

Jim Walter Homes Heritage Bowl brings the event another step closer
to becoming the on-going holiday tradition it deserves to be. Jim
Walter Homes’ marketing area overlays nicely in the states where
schools from both conferences are located and provides unique promo
tional and partnership opportunities in exposing both sponsor and
event to an even wider audience.”
Ken Free, MEAC Commissioner states, “Jim Walter Homes will
bring additional credibility to the game along with the financial
resources to assist our efforts to better market and promote this
event.” SWAC’s Commissioner Dr. James Frank believes, “The Her
itage Bowl’s future will suiely be enhanced with Jim Walter Homes
on board as our title sponsor. We’re pleased to have the corporate
support of a major entity like Jim Walter Homes.”
A variety of sponsorship opportunities for the Jim Walter Homes
Heritage Bowl exist both locally and nationally. Joining Jim Walter
Homes this year are other already-committed HBCC sponsors includ

The Jim Walter Homes Heritage Bowl 1995 will be just as exciting

with selected basketball game sponsorships
and sponsorship of the M LAC and SWAC
basketball tournaments in March. Gillette’s
program will expand to include a variety of
activities which will provide a platform to
support academic and athletic development
at HBCC schools.
HBCC is also working on a number of
additional ideas to enhance the services
provided to its member institutions. One
such idea is a concept called “HBCC Side
lines.” The objective of the sidelines concept
is to go into the marketplace on behalf of the
schools and negotiate the best deals possible
for footwear, apparel, equipment and per
formance beverages. To date, Mississippi
Valley State University, Delaware State
University, Clark Atlanta U ni versity, Morris
Brown College and Alabama State Univer
sity have agreed to allow HBCC to negotiate
such deals. For the fall of 1996, HBCC is
looking at the possibility of putting together
a series of marketing seminars for its mem
ber institutions as well as helping them sell
sponsorship packages in their local mar
kets.
As HBCC grows it looks forward to devel
oping strong relationships with all histori
cally black college athletic programs and
working together to build upon the great
tradition of black college athletics.
