CSRA Hoops Roundup
By A. B. Brown, WRDW 1480 The FAN, Sportscaster
Everyone in the Augusta area is still ecstatic over
Josey s incredible run on the gridiron this season,
but its time to redirect all the excitement. The
whistles are blowing, the sneakers are squeaking,
and the twine is being tickled ... It’s hoops time!
Last year was outstanding: the players, coaches,
and teams in the CSRA enjoyed remarkable suc
cess on the hardwood. Westside finished as one of
the nation’s top teams at 33-1, defeating Josey in
the AAA state title game. Gone from that Westside
team is U. Conn, signee Ricky Moore, but several
other top players have gone on to bigger and better
A.B/s top 10
1. Westside
The defending AAA state
champs lose Ricky Moore (U. Con
necticut), but Head Coach Ken
Wright’s cupboard isn’t bare. Su
perjunior William Avery returns
as one of the most explosive scor
ers in the Southeast. Senior Micha
el Cummings is a Div. I prospect
who can dominate games at times
and Lakeside transfer Travis
wright should flourish in
backcourt with Avery.
2. Swainsboro
The Tigers finished 2nd in State
AA last season. Explosive team
which features Auburn signee, 6-
9 senior Randy Hughes and scor
ing machine Sergio Washington.
Have already beaten ARC once,
rematch at ARC Jan. 3.
3. ARC
Coach Don Brock has another
talented bunch lead by junior point
guard Tyrone Shine, who will
emerge as one of the state’s best.
Junior Antwan Dent is a Div. I
prospect and Jr. Oliver Ottley can
score. Need help inside.
4. North Augusta
The Yellow Jackets lost all-state
performer Antonio Grant, but re
turn area’s best 3-point shooter in
junior guard Kevin Lynn. Also
sophomore point guard Kevin
Muns is a gym rat who can flat-out
handle the rock. Michael Johnson
needs to step up in Grant’s ab
sence.

things: Thomson’s Vonteego Cummings (Pittsburgh)
and Antrone Lee (Florida), Butler’s Andre Kerr
(Furman), and North Augusta’s Antonio Grant will
play at New Hampton Prep in New Hampshire.
However, this year’s crop is loaded with talent as
well. Westside, ARC and several other area teams
have their sights set on state titles. Also, some of the
best high-school talent around can be found right
here in the CSRA. Here is some info for all you
basketball junkies to help you plan your schedules
this season.
5. Josey
Probably the most athletic and
deepest team in the area. Fin
ished 2nd in the state to Westside.
Expect another big year: these
guys know how to win. Need ei
ther Jamal Tate or Marco to step
up at point guard, and they lack
outside shooting.
6. Evans
Coach Kevin Louthan is a bright
young coach, but Freddie Will
iams and Roger Toxey will make
his job a little easier this season.
Williams is a 6-0 sophomore who
has unlimited potential. Toxey, a
6-2 1/2 junior, is an extremely
goud athlete and a hard worker.
No inside game.
7. Butler
The Bulldogs have under
achieved thus far, but are a very
talented group. Senior Herbert
Holmes (6-4) and Juniors William
Gates (6-7) and Carl Greene (6-4)
can play. Weak at guard.
8. Glenn Hills
Off to a good start, but very
young. Most talented player could
be freshman Anthony Farmer, 6-
2. Need consistent back court play
from Ricardo Berry.
9. South Aiken
When you talk thoroughbred b
ball, you talk Tony Kitchings. Al
though just a sophomore, the 6-9
Kitchings is one of the area’s top
players. Most publications rank
him as one of the top 10 sopho
mores in the country. Tim Angelos
could help but Kitchings is the
key.

Augusta’s Moraetes
recognized as
SGMA sports hero
PARSIPPANY, NJ
The Sporting Goods Manufac
turers Association (SGMA) and
the National Sportscasters and

announced the selection of Tom
Moraetes, a resident of Augusta,
Georgia, as one of 10 finalists for
the second annual SGMA He
roes Award Program.
The remaining nine finalists,
with hometown, are: Stan Rowe
(Huntsville, AL); Comilas
Robertson (Richmond, CA); Bill
Quinby (Cedar Rapids, IA);
Melvin Cunningham (Lexington,

MA); Dr. J. Randall Rauh (Miles
City, MT); Tom Ward (The Dalles,

VA); and Jim Paton (Spokane,

“There 10 individuals have
dedicated so much of their time,
money and effort to their local
sports communities,” said John
Riddle, president of SGMA.
“They are tremendous examples
of the type of individuals who are
making a difference in the lives
of today’s youth, and are truly
the unsung heroes in sports.”
Moraetes was chosen as a fi
nalist for his 20 years as a boxing
coach in the Augusta area.
Moraetes, who works with the
Richmond County Recreation
Department, founded The Au
gusta Boxing Club in his garage,
with the goal being to give many

The SGMA Heroes Program
December 28, 1995

The 10 finalists were chosen
