1996 ASU volleyball season preview
The Augusta State University
volleyball team, coming off a
school record 23-13 season, has
big things in mind for the 1996
campaign.
The Lady Jaguars, who until
last season had just one winning
year, return five starters from
lastyear’steam that placed third
in the Peach Belt Athletic Con
ference. .
Among the returnees is a pair
of talented seniors, both of whom
are imposing figures. Megan
Cammarata (Sr., Florissant, Mo.)
earned All-Conference honors a
year ago, and she was the only
Lady Jaguar named to the All-
PBAC Tournament team as she
led the Lady Jags to the PBAC
semifinals.
Megan, who led the team in
both kills and digs in 1995, also
was named PBAC Player of the
Week. She was ASU’s first Play
er of the Week Award winner
since 1992.
Anothersenioris Tess Lott(Sr.,
University Park, I 11.), who could
possibly go over the 1,000 career
kills mark this season. Lott is
alsoastrong defensive player, as
sheracked up 102 blocks and 237
digs last year.
Augusta State head coach
Tabetha Stephens feels that her
two returning seniors will pro
vide ample leadership.
... “Megan is a leader on and off
the court. She has earned her
teammates’ respect.” Stephens

added, “Tess is our only four
year player on the squad. She
has been through the good days
and the bad days.”
“She wants to go out on top,”
noted Stephens, the PBAC Co-
Coach of the Year last season.
Five juniors dot the roster, in
cluding three who were around
in the lean times.
Jamie Runnells (Jr., Frisco,
Co.)was an All-PBAC salection a
yearago. Her 277 kills were third
on the team, and her play has
earned her respect amongleague
opponents.
Amy Clemons (Jr., Milford,
Ohio)is perhaps the most under
rated player in the Peach Belt. A
strong presence at the net, she
battled throughinjurieslast year
to nail 168 kills and 72 blocks.
Two more juniors on the squad
are Shana Millican (West Palm
Beach, Fla.) and Pam Griffin
(Florissant, Mo.).
Millican played in nearly half
the team’s matches last year and
showed tremendous improve
ment. Griffin, a Junior College
transfer, will have some big shoes
to fill.
“Pam will replace PBAC Rook
ie of the Year Shelley Taylor in
the middle,” says Stephens.
“She’s an experienced player who
is aggressive at the net.”
Also returning is setter Pam
Harriger (Jr., Marietta, Ga.).
Aftersetting a school record with
714 assists in 1994, Pam missed
all of 1995 with a torn ACL. She
will team up with the team’s only
sophomores, Harriet Gigis (So.,
Charleston, S.C.) at setter.
Last season, Harriet broke
Harriger’s record as she dished
out 768 assists for the Lady Jag
uars. Along with Griffin,
Stephens and assistant coach
Erika Hale have signed three
true freshmen tothe 1996 roster.
Tara Patrick (Fr., Charleston,
S.C.) was a high-school team
mate of current Lady Jag Harriet
Gigis.
Lyndal Patton (Jacksonville,
Fla.) and Kim Wheadon (Silver
Thorn, Co.) are both intelligent
players who will contribute this
season.
After a school record third

place finish last year, the Lady
Jaguars have three main goals
for the season.
“We want to win the regular
season title, and this is the first
year that can be a realistic goal,”
said Stephens.
She added, “We want to play
competitively within the region
and better our record from last
year.”
To help achieve those goals
ASU has a beefed-up schedule,
including the top teams from the
South Atlantic Conference and
the Sunshine State Conference,
including 1995 Division II na
tional champion Barry Univer
sity.
“Our schedule is very compet
itive,” noted Stephens.
