Local restaurants selected
for national directory
Fiverestaurantsin the Augus
ta area have been selected for
inclusion in Where the Locals Eat:
A Guide to the Best Restaurants
in America, a national directory
of restaurants that are popular
with the people who live near
them. The local restaurants cho
sen as “best” by area residents
are: Duke’s Restaurant, Le Case
du Teau, The French Market
Grille, Al's Family Restaurant
and Luigi’s Restaurant.
The researchers at Magellan
Press spent more than two years
gathering information on nearly
10,000 popular restaurants in
more than 1,000 American cit
ies. None of the restaurants in
the directory paid to be included.
The only way a restaurant could
make it into the guide was to be
recommended by someone who
livesinthe area and knows which
restaurants her or his neighbors
like best.
Lee Wilson, editor-in-chief for
the book, says, “We believe Where
the Locals Eat is the most compre
hensive and reliable restaurant
guide on the market. Who knows
better where to eat in San Jose or

Seminar to be held for local businesses
On Tuesday, August 27, Geor
gia state government will offer
local businesses a first-hand over
view on how the state purchas
ing process works and provide
them with information vendors
need in order to compete for con
tracts. The seminar is free and
will be held at Augusta’s Shoney’s
Inn, located at 3023 Washington
Road, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. In
addition to state purchasing offi
cials, local procurement officers
from area colleges, universities
and state department regional
offices will be on-hand to discuss
current procurement opportuni
ties.
During the 1996 general as
sembly, Governor Zell Miller and
state legislators passed the Pur
chasing Reform Act of 1996,
which will directly impact the
business community’s ability to
sell goods and services to Geor

authorities, commissions, colleg

“There are other restaurant

take into accountthat people trav

Magellan’s researchers gath
ered information on 75 different
categories of restaurants — res
taurants known for everything
from their barbecue or vegetari
an menu or wine list to their
“child-friendly” atmosphere. Few
cities can boast 75 varieties of
restaurants — not every city of
fers sushi or Spanish cuisine or
24-hour dining — but the list
ings for many larger cities are
extensive. And in most cities,
there is more than one “best”
restaurant listed for many cate
gories. This is reflective of
Magellan’s research: If their
sources named several “best” Ital
ianrestaurants, sodid they. Each
restaurant listing contains the
name, telephone number and
street address of the recommend
ed restaurant. The Magellan
curement registry, which will be
accessible on-line through
Internet and will list bid oppor
tunities from the State Purchas
ing Office and various state agen
cies. Also, the law allows in
creased ability to solicit bids by
telephone or facsimile, as well as
use of a Nationsßank VISA Pur
chasing Card and its payment
remittance to vendors within
three days. These new features
will be discussed in detail at the
seminar. Overall, the Purchas
ing Reform Act will make it eas
ier for vendors and the small
business community to do busi
ness with the state. Participants
will have an opportunity to ask
questions regarding their indus

company’s vendor registration,
register on-site to selltothe state
and network with purchasing
agents.
This vendor education semi
