Recently, seven of the heads of our
historically Black Church denominations
made the following assessment of the
"State of Black America": "African Ameri
can people are faced today with the most
serious challenge to the quality of life on
ourcommunities since slavery!" To effec
tively remedy this precarious situation,
these leaders are moving together this
summer and fall to organize the "Holy
Bold" members of their congregations
intoaGIDEON ARMY to undertake awhole
range of spiritual, economic, educational
and political initiatives.
The Cover Story of this special issue of
the National B LACK MONITOR pre
sents a brief history of the major Black
denominations and outlines the first step
these religious leaders have resolved to
do in this evolving collaborative process.

[_' The letters AOIP oviglnal:)' stood for Assault On llliteracy Program--a networking and coordinating framework for ussaulting‘the root causes of illiteracy (i.e.,
1 lack of self-esteem and self-efficacy). However, two things were soon recognized. Onething recognizedwas that, whenever these root causes were assaulted,
1 we simultaneouzly were engaged in a process for assaulting almost all the other ills imposed most heavily on the Black community (i.e., drugs, other crimes,
needless forms of welfare, teen pregnancy, etc.). The other thinq_r:ecognimd was that it was impossible to assault illiteracy at its core among many Black
Americans without simultaneously addressing those other ills. That is when the amazing and long-needed Goals for The Year 2000 and%oyond were
developed, and the name changed to Assault On llliteracy Process, or simply AOIP.

Fauntroy, which will enable the heads of
these denominations to convene millions
of their members at a time to discuss
subjects as diverse as 1) facilitating the
conduct of effective voter registration and
get-out-the-vote campaigns on atargeted
basis; 2) carrying out various economic
empowerment programs; and 3) educat
ing and mobilizing Black Americans to
have impact upon public policy issues
being considered at the national, state, or
locallevel that affect the quality of life inthe
African American community.

appreciate hearing from you on these and
other subjects affecting our Black com
munities.
If you are in the market for a new car(s),
please keep in mind the ongoing, urgent
collective AOIP campaignto "prioritize sup
port for the car makers (and others) who
do the most to provide jobs and other
economic benefits to Black Americans."
The idea behind this Black leadership
initiated U.S. Auto Industry Support cam
paign--advocating the long-established
focus of another AOIP-affiliated organiza
tion, SCLC led by the renowned Dr. Jo-
seph Lowery--arose surrounding two con
cerns as follows:
1) the need for Black Americans to "edu
cate their spending dollars to make more
sense" asameans of havingalong-needed
and sufficiently-realistic economic base
for motivating our young and others to
want to learn so as to earn the opportunity
of obtaining a good-paying job that can
enable achievement of a responsible and
fulfilling lifestyle; and,
2) how best our Black leadership groups
could be far more supportive of the three
U.S. carmakers (despitethefact thatthey
have provided many more jobs and other
economic benefits to Black Americans
than any other corporations in America,
and have invested heavily and con
tinuously in various marketing and adver
tising strategies embracing Black-owned
media vehicles) who continuously have
suffered huge losses of car sales among
Black Americans to "Import-label" makers
who proportionately have done little either
to provide jobs and other economic ben
efits to the communities of Black America
or committedthemselves (through "Fair-
Share-type" agreements) to deal equitably
at present with the car-buying communi
ties of Black America.
