Alum remembers Augusta College
hefore fall construction hegins
By Rhonda Jones
AUGUSTA FOCUS Staff Writer
A couple of weeks ago, I took a
ride up to my alma mater to find
out how people feel about the
(sudden) change of name and the
new logo. After making an ap
pointment with the president’s
secretary, I buzzed around cam
pus harassing students for their
opinions. (As you may remem
ber, about half didn’t seem to
have any.) So I got the bright
idea to go to my former place of
employment —the Writing Lab
— where I'd spent many joyful
days and nights during my col
lege career. I knew there’d be
lots of opinions there.
I won’t say the air that day felt
like a giant, wet, moldy blanket
or thatl wanted nothing more at
that moment than to find a giant
glass of iced tea sitting under a
bush. But, with an eye toward
speeding things up a bit, I busted
across campus like a roadrunner
and headed for the quadrangle,
through the gate in the tall brick
fence between Payne Hall and
Benet House ...
Andhad to stop before I mowed
down the REGISTRATION EN
TER HERE sign in the middle of
the walk. I froze, and the most
inane thought went through my
head: That’s the same sign. The
same one that had pointed the
way to the bowels of Payne Hall
the last few times I, myself, pre
registered for classes. The same
brick walk, the same magnolias.
Another gate in another tall
fence, and the quadrangle lay
before me like some secret gar
den I had grown too accustomed
to. There was the line of white
paint accidentally left on the wall
by Spanish instructor Nicassio
Urbina while painting steps for
one of the last Elizabethan
Fayres, before finding greener
pastures elsewhere. That after
noon, we had talked about books
we wanted to write and he gave
me a copy of one of his short
stories. I haven’t read it yet. And
there was the sundial and the
goldfish pond, new again in my
eyes that were, for the moment,

Iwillalwaysregret having met
Nathan Bindler only once. The
artist that inhabited Studio B,
and my youth, gave that court
yard a feeling of magic, as if
something special happened
there on a regular basis. His
heavy pounding, which he did
behind the little building, let
passers-by know the studio’s own
tiny courtyard was a place of
creation. Gentler work he did
inside, with the door open in
warm weather, surrounded by
his pieces, amenable to visitors.
But on this day the studio was
locked. Gutted. A great pile of
rubble and dust satin the middle
of the room. His wood sign still
hung on the door. NATHAN
BINDLER, it said. Below it
crouched a typed paper sign that
read, Janice E. Williams. Please
knock. 1 remembered her from
my humanities experience back
in ’B7. The sign’s edges had
curled.
Another pile of rubble decorat
ed the little storeroom in the
back of the building. A blue rug
like the ones that had been ev
erywhere when I attended what
was then Augusta College, lay
crumpled on top, the AC logo
barely recognizable.
The next day, I spent the bet
ter part of an hour in President
William Bloodworth’s office, dis
cussing the campus’ future. In
his conference room, he has a
picture of what the giant new
science building will look like.

Metropolis comes to mind.
Dr. Bloodworth presented me
with some figures for other fu
ture buildings as well: the S4O
million classroom building that
will face the science complex from
across the street, for instance, on
the spot where the six little ex
warehouses, where I got my de
gree, now sit. The cobbled brick
walk between them will be gone,
as will the benches where I used
to study, chasing yellow jackets
away from my Coke, the class
room where I discovered I am a
writer, the events that led me
here, to this seat in front of this
computer. It will, however, make
more room for more students,
and “solve the asbestos problem.”
Yeah.
I don’t know what will happen
to the quadrangle, or to the little
studio where Nathan Bindler
used to work. But on the day I
went poking around, I discov
ered the tiny courtyard where he
used to pound out his shapes
feels like fall even in dog days.
Maybe it’s the old leaves that
crunch like dry bones, or the con
figuration of the shade on the
brick wall. Maybe Bindler never
really left. I didn’t know the an

sipped on a soft drink, and began
writing.
