NEW YORK
The Jewish Guild for the Blind

. The 12-page black-on-white ac

to answer many of the questions
posed by sighted people about how
to be helpful in the presence of a
blind person. Itis also instructive
for family members or others who
are living with a relative or friend
who has lost his vision.
The brochure uses large type
and cartoon-style illustrations to
clarify its “Do” and “Don’t” theme.
Helpful information includes:
- Do introduce yourself. Not
everyone recognizes voices Or re
members them.
-Don’tshout. Visuallyimpaired
or blind does not mean deaf.
-Don’tleave a blind person talk
ing to himself. Let him know
when you are leaving.
- Don'’t use hand signals. Blind
people can’t see waving or point
ing hands.
- Don't omit words like “see” or
“look.” Visually impaired or blind
persons are not offended by these
words and understand that these
words are part of normal conver
sation.
- Dofeel free to photograph blind

Study compares blood
pressure medications
ORANGE COUNTY, Calif.
Ithaslongbeenestablished that
reducing blood pressure reduces
the risk of heart attack but, al
though there are many effective
blood pressure medications avail
able, not all of them work equally
well in all people. A new study,
comparing three popular blood
pressure-lowering drugs, confirms
that, among African Americans,
the drug Ziac is as effective as
Norvasc at controlling high blood
pressure and more effective than
Vasotec.
The multi-center study, for
which Joel Neutel, M.D., director
of research at the Orange County
Heart Instituteand Research Cen
ter, wasprincipalinvestigator, has
been presented in New Orleans
by L. Michael Prisant, M.D.,at the
Eleventh International Confer
ence on Hypertension in Blacks.
Dr. Prisant is professor of medi
cineattheMedical College of Geor
gia.
" High blood pressure (hyperten
sion)is a major health problem for
African Americans. While approx
imately one in four Americans
suffersfrom hypertension, therate
is one in three among African
Americans. The conference is
sponsored by the non-profit Inter
national Society on Hypertension
in Blacks (ISHIB).
This data on African Americans
was part of a placebo-controlled,
randomized, double-blind study
in which 323 patients with hyper
tension were given Ziac, Norvasc,
Vasotec or placebo. Among the 51
African Americans in the study:
BZiac reduced systolic (heart
while contracting) blood pressure
by an average of 17.3 points
(mmHg), and diastolic (heart at
rest) blood pressureby an average
of 11.6 mmHg;
MNorvasc reduced systolic
blood pressure by an average of
14.6 mmHg, and diastolic blood
pressure by an average of 12.5
mmHg.

BVasotec reduced systolic
blood pressure by an average of
3.6 mmHg, and diastolic blood
pressure by an average of 5.6
mmHg.
Differences between Ziac and
Norvascwerenot statistically sig
nificant because the number of
African Americans in the study
was not sufficiently large.
Ziac (bisoprolol fumarate/
hydrochlorothiazide), Norvasc
(amlodipine) and Vasotec
(enalapril) represent three of the
most widely prescribed catego
ries of anti-hypertensive drugs.
Ziac is a low-dose, combination
diuretic/beta blocker; Norvasc is
a calcium channel blocker; and
Vasotec is an angiotensin con
verting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor.
Diuretics and beta blockers are
recommended as first-line drugs
for the treatment of hyperten
sion by the Joint National Com
mittee on Detection, Evaluation
and Treatment of High Blood
Pressure, a panel of experts as
sembled by the National Heart,
Lung and Blood Institute.
“The findings of the study dem
onstrate that low-dose, combi
nation therapy is an important
alternative tofirst-line treatment
of hypertensionin all patient sub
groups,” said Dr. Neutel. “The
advantage of this approach to
the managment of hypertension
is that is maximizes reduction in
blood pressure while minimiz
ing associated adverse events
and negative metabolic side ef
fects.” In the study, adverse
events and metabolic changes
were no different with Ziac than
with the two other agents.
In addition to his role as direc
tor of research, Orange County
Heart Institute and Research
Center, Dr. Neutel is assistant
clinical professor of medicine,
University of California, Irvine,
and chief of hypertension, Veter
an’s Administration Hospital,
Long Beach, Calif.
