Environmental hazards: Matter of life, death
The statistics are frightening.
Fifty percent of African Ameri
cans and 60 percent of Latinos
live in areas impacted by uncon
trolled hazardous waste sites,
compared to only 33 percent of
their white counterparts. Infact,
race is the most statistically sig
nificant indicator of where haz
ardous waste sites are located.
In an effort to counter this neg
ative trend, the National Urban
League hosted a workshop, The
Environment and the Health of
our Community, and urged com
munity action. Panelists includ
ed Michelle D. Jordan, deputy
regional administrator, United
States Environmental Protection
Agency; Peggy Shepard, execu
tive director, West Harlem Envi
ronmental Action; and U.S. con
gressional representative Will
iam Jefferson. And Roger Lyons,

“Practices of environmental
racism have resulted in signifi
cant threats to the health status
of African Americans and
Latinos. Asthma, organ cancer,
lupus and leukemia are among
the illnesses occurring in record
number among these minority
groups and it can be traced to the
effects of their environment, said
Peggy Shepard. “If we don’t get
communities educated about the
dangers they face in their envi

One noted grass-roots effort is
the Brownsfield Action Agenda,
an Environmental Protection
Agency project that seeks to ed

assist them in turning blighted
initiatives which expanded the

outreach throughout the Penn

Ashley spent two years with the
United Way of the Texas Gulf

record fund-raising results as a
campaign manager.
He graduated from Wiley Col

the University of Pennsylvania’s

says EPA’s Michelle D. Jordan.
“We have to do our part to let

Congressman William
Jefferson stressed the need to
