‘Marvin L. Cummings earns the
PPA master’s of photography
Marvin L. Cummings has re
cently been awarded the mas
ter’s of photography by the Pro
fessional Photographers of Amer
ica (PPA). Mr. Cummings, the
owner and operator of Marvin L.
Cummings Studio in Augusta,
Georgia holds the photographic
craftsman degree awarded by the
PPA, and the Georgia fellowship
degree and the Georgia service
degree awarded by the Georgia
Professional Photographers As
sociation (GPPA).
In addition to being the third
African American to earn the
master’s of photography from the
PPA, Marvin Cummings wasthe
first to serve as president of the
Georgia Professional Photogra
phers Association. Currently,
Cummings is the president of
the Professional Photographers
Minority Network, an organiza
tion dedicated to developing and
educating minority photogra
phers all over the country, and
serves as chairman of the board
of the GPPA.
For Cummings, being the third
African American to earn a mas
ter’s degree from the PPA is an
especially rewarding accomplish
ment, since his initial interest in
photography came about by acci
dent. As a young boy he worked
in a shoeshine shop. His employ
er set up a camera in the shop to
take photographs of soldiers and
other customers. When his em
ployer had to be away from the
store, she charged young Marvin
with the task of manning the
camera.
His interest in photography
grew as a result of courting the
girl who would become his wife,
and later, after marriage and
starting a family, being a doting
father. Photographing his son’s
soccer games was his rudimen
tary introduction to the business

Through the encouragement of
others and the hope of earning

joining photography associa

ed the call to build, own and
operate his own professional
photographic studio.
This decision was not an easy
one for him to make. By profes
sion, Cummings was a success
ful masonry contractor who, with
a business partner, owned a con
tracting business. Having a wife

and three children meant that
his decision to change careers
was not his alone tomake. Decid
ing to enter photography full
time meant his wife and family
would not only have to agree to
thisdrasticand uncertain change
in theirlives, but that they would
have to place their faith and live
lihood in his skills as a photogra
pher. Today, with his family’s
love and support, Marvin
Cummings displays the creden
tials which certify the faith his
family put into him.
In addition to winning numer
ous awards and honors,
Cummings has conducted pho
tographic workshops and semi
nars across the country and has
spoken at national photographic
conventions. He has had articles
appear in trade magazines such
as Southern Exposure, Georgia
Focus and Professional Photog
raphers.
Cummings has had several
portraits accepted forthe GPPA’s
Traveling Loan Collection and
the PPA’s Traveling Loan Col
lection. Also, he has had a por
trait at the Epcot Center in Flor
ida, and has photographed na
tionally known celebrities, such
as Miss Black America, actor
Danny Glover, opera singer
Jessye Norman and soul singer
James Brown.
Cummings hopes to see other
African Americans, especially
young people, enter the field of
photography. Like him, he hopes
their love of photography and
the challenge of setting and
reaching goals will inspire them
tostrive until they are the best at
what can be a fulfilling field.
Cummings and his wife
Mozelle have three children:
twins Marva and Marvin, 21, and
Marlica, 13.

North Augusta student
receives SI,OOO Chick-fil-A
Leadership Scholarship
NORTH AUGUSTA
Chick-fil-A,lnc. hasannounced
that North Augusta resident
Kevin Bradford has been award
ed one of the first SI,OOO Leader
ship Scholarships under the com
pany’s newlyrevised scholarship
programs, bringing the total
awarded in South Carolina to
$516,000 and overall scholar
ships awarded to date to nearly
$11.5 million by the Atlanta
based chain. '
Bradford, a student at the Uni
versity of South Carolina-Aiken,
was nominated by his employer,
Jason Adams, operator of the
Chick-fil-A restaurant at Wash
ington Road. Kevin is planning
to attend Belmont University.
The Chick-fil-A chain’s new
Leadership Scholarship Program
provides assistance torestaurant
employees who want to further
their education. Eligibility re
quires that employees complete
their high-school education; are
active in their schools and com
munities; demonstrate a solid
work ethic; and possess strong
leadership abilities, good team
work skills and a desire to suc
ceed.
“The new program recognizes
employees who have acquired the
leadership qualities and skills
necessary to be successful in life
while providing an additional in
centive for our employees to re
main dedicated and work hard,”
said Adams. “Kevin is being rec
ognized for his abilities and po
tential to accomplish great
things.”
In addition, Bradford will be
eligible for Chick-fil-A’s new S.
Truett Cathy Scholar Award
which provides additional SI,OOO
scholarships to the top 25 Chick
fil-A Leadership recipients for
each year. :
Chick-fil-A, Inc. founder S.
Truett Cathy established the
Team Member Scholarship pro
gramin 1973 toencourage youths
to further their education. The
scholarship was awarded to an.
employee who had completed
high school and had worked at
least 2,000 hours at Chick-fil-A
for two consecutive years.
More than 11,000 employees
havebenefited from the program
with nearly $1 million in schol
arships awarded in 1995 alone.
The company replaced the Team
Member Scholarship with the
Leadership Scholarship Program
in 1996.
“We created the Leadership
Scholarship Program because we
wanted to redirect our focus,”
said Truett Cathy. “We are plac
ing greater emphasis on recog
nizing our employees for their
positive attitudes, strong leader
shipskills and the individual role
they play in their communities.”
The Chick-fil-A scholarship pro
gram is the only one of its kind
offered by a quick-service restau
rantchain. According to the Coun
cil For Aid to Education, no other
company in terms of size does as
much in the scholarship area as
does Chick-fil-A, Inc. Currently,
almost 38 percent of Chick-fil-A
restaurant operators are former
scholarship winners.
In 1995, Chick-fil-A commem
orated its 10,000 th scholarship
milestone ($lO million) by dedi
cating a 23-foot-tall sculpture to
the city of Atlanta. Designed by
Georgia State University art stu
dents, the sculpture depicts peo
ple reaching upward, being
helped by and helping others to
climb the arch of books. The
bronze sculpture signifies indi
viduals’ responsibility to help
each other work toward a better
future by building a solid foun
dation through a good education.
