Where Evil Sleeps
The man swam fast, like a witch was riding him.
His skin was as smooth and dark as Jamaican
rum, and he looked that strong, too. At least his
armsdid. Armsaren’tthefirst thing lusually notice
about a man, but I was bored and slightly drunk
andtherewasn’t a hell ofalot else to look ator think
about....
Thestateof the hotel hadn’t mattered much inthe
beginning. 1 spent my first night in Kingston
charmed by the banana trees and bittersweet smell
of the air with its trace of allspice and car exhaust.
The next day I'd hit all the tourist spots touted in
Frommer’s guidebook — Devon House, the Bob
Marley Museum, Hope Gardens — haggling with
the sisters in the crafts market like a native-born
daughter.
And so the adventure — which she is trying not
to have on her Jamaican vacation — begins for
Tamara Hayle. But, as she will find, crime does not
take a holiday. The man was Delaware Brown,
friend of “chatty” fellow tourist Lilah Love and her
obnoxious husband Sammy Lee Love, with whom
she decides to spend some social time. (The group,
notthe husband.) Unfortunately, the nightendsin
murder, leaving Tamara connected with the trou
ble because of her new acquaintances. What she
would really like to do is just disappear from the
whole situation yet, during the chaos, sheloses her
bag that contains her keys, wallet, passport and
money. Greatly restricted in her chance forescape,
Tamara is at the mercy of someone from her past...
The combination of more murders and the sur
prise appearance of an old flame puts Tamara in
the path of a cold-blooded killer, and faces her with
trying to avoid charges connecting her to murder
as well as trying to stay alive. /
But Tamara Hayle is not the ordinary tourist.
Sheis a former cop and single mom turned private
investigator, with a wry sense ofhumorand a keen
sensitivity, and knows what makes people tick.
Tamara’s author, Valerie Wilson Wesley, is cur
rently editor-at-large of Essence magazine. She is
also the author of Devil’s Gonna Get Him; When
Death Comes Stealing; and Where Do I Go from
Here, which received an American Library Associ
ation “Best Books for Reluctant Readers” citation.
She is also co-author of two children’s books.
