Paine hoids book-signing for professor
AUGUSTA
A book-signing will be held for
author and Paine College profes
sor Dr. Leslie J. Pollard on Sep
tember sth at 4 p.m. in the Odeum
of the Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial
Chapel. Dr. Pollard will give a
“book talk” on his work, Complaint
to the Lord: Historical Perspec
tivesontheAfrican-American Eld
erly. He will also sign copies of the
book. The public is invited to at
tend. Copies of the book will be
available for purchaseattheevent.
Based on the assumption that
black history and culture should
inform old-age policy formulation,
the book combines the macro-per
spective of the community taking
care of its own needy elderly with
the micro-perspective of the ex
amination of the Home for Aged
and Infirm Colored Persons
(HAICP), foundedin Philadelphia
in 1864 by blacks and Quakers.
This is Dr. Pollard’s first book.
He has authored numerous arti
cles. Pollard received his B.A. from
Paine College in 1965, his M.A. in
American history in 1972 and his
Ph.D. in social science in 1977
from the Maxwell School of Citi
zenship at Syracuse University.
After a year at Voorhees College
in Denmark, S.C., Pollard joined
the Paine faculty and chaired the
division of social sciences there
from 1978 to 1993. In January of
1993, Pollard became the
Callaway Professor of History at
Paine, one of 40 professorial chairs
in Georgia endowed by the

Telethon, Sunday, Sept. 1 begin
ning at 9 p.m. through Monday,
Sept. 2 at 6:30 p.m. Anchors Bob

Morrison, John Friday, Tim
Brown, Tom Knight and Michelle
Lima will be on-hand to host this
year’s telethon, which will be held
at the Augusta Sheraton Hotel.
All money raised at the local tele
thon is used locally. Last year
more than $120,000 was pledged.
Shane Davis named WJBF
assistant sports director
WJBF-TV news director Ange
la Robbins has announced that
Shane Davis has been named as
sistant sports director for WJBF
NewsCHANNEL 6. He begins his
duties on Sept. 9.
Originally from Nashville,
Tenn., Mr. Davis has experience
which includes a stint at the NBC
affiliate in Midland, Tex. A grad
uate of Syracuse University, he
also attended Tennessee State for
two years and served in the U.S.
Army for one year.
Montel Williams receives
Silver Satellite Award
Talk show host Montel Williams
is on a roll: Ratings for his pro
gram are at an all-time high; he
walked away withthe 1996 Emmy
for Outstanding Talk Show Host
and the mayor of New York City
honored him with the Crystal
Apple Award for his distinctive
career achievements and contri
butions to the entertainment
community in New York.
So what’s next for Montel? The
Silver Satellite Award, presented to
him by the American Women in
Television and Radio. Each year
this award is bestowed upon an
individual for outstanding accom
plishmentsin orcontributionstothe
field of electronic communications.

Pollard founded the Annual Con
ference on the Black Experience
in 1981, wrote and supervised
grants from various foundations
and endowments and directed the
reaccreditation process at the col
lege in 1980-81 and 1990-91.
