Most rap fans are already quite
familiar with the uniquely talent
ed Mr. 111, due to his contributions
to albums, such as the top-selling
Cell Block Records Compilation,
where he’s featured on the tracks
“Expect The Unexpected” (with
FM Blue and Bad-N-Fluenz), “1-
800-Fed-Up”(with Shorty B), “Can
You Swing It” (with his younger
brother Devon), and the solo “3
Hills of Suga.” With the new Cell
Block/Priority Records full-length
debut The Rebirth, which features
all new material, Mr. 11l not only
delivers more of his addictive, self
described “rough like pavement”
style, but also firmly establishes
himself as a rapper who will be
around for quite some time to
come.

Mr. 11l officially got into the
rap game in 1990, while still liv
ing back East in Chester, Pa.,
just outside Philadelphia, when
he was a member of the under
ground rap crew Mad Mobb. Soon
after moving West to Oakland,
Calif. in 1993, Mr. 111 hooked up
with his two brothers-in-law,
Charles and Davy D, owners and
operators of Cell Block Records.
However, it wasn’t simply a case
z‘ who you know. Mr. Il still had
prove himself. He recalled,
“They took me out to West Oak
land tomeet Rappin’ Rontoshow
him some skills and then they
took me into the studio to ex
change rapping skills with (Ant)
Diddley.” Luckily both members
of Bad-N-Fluenz were impressed,

so much in fact, they invited him
to collaborate on their album on
the tracks “Rough like Pave
ment,” “Maniac Mind,” “Dirty
Work” and “Pulls Out My Flam
er.” Since then, Mr. 11l hasbeen
busy lending his skills to numer
ous other artists’ albums, includ
ing those of Ant Banks, Askari X ‘
and Lil Gangsta. In his long
awaited solo debut, The Rebirth,
Mr. 11l is joined by many of these
same people, including Bad-N-
Fluenz, FM Blue and Askari X.
Meanwhile, the album’s accom
plished stable of producers in
cludes Ant Bands Doyle, B Nat
ural and Blackjack.
Mr. Il explains the album title
by saying, “It’s the rebirth of me,
meaning a metamorphoses of me
coming out of a cocoon to enlight
enmen with game and tobrighten
dim-lit brains.” This he accom
plishes throughout the album on
tracks like “Vicious,” “They Ain’t
Won Yet” and “King of the Round
Stick.” This track is a play on the
rapper’s name, Mr. 111, which is
short for Mr. Il Stick, “the stick
being the microphone,” he ex
plains. Not too surprisingly, on
“King of the Round Stick,” he lets
itbe known that he truly is “one of
the best” MCs out there. Mr. Il
further demonstrates this on the
track “They Ain’t Won Yet,” where
he’s joined by Ant Diddley Dog.
“This song is aimed at society, ‘
which is trying to hold me back as |
a person and control me,” he says.
Of all the tracks found on the
album, the one that perhaps cap
tures Mr. Ill’s no-holds-barred
stylethebestis “Vicious,”on which
he raps back and forth with
Rappin’ Ron in an instantly en
gaging conversational style rap
flow. “It’s an exchange of vicious
flows,” he explains, referring to
rhymes that include, “Like Pac,
I'll die today. Watch my Glock
provide the way.” This and all of
Mr. lll's songs are packed with
thought-provoking lyrics. “It’s all
tiedintothereal. Anyone from the
street will be able to determine,
the real from the fake,”, Il says, ..
And he’s right. The Rebirth is the
real.

Even though the presidential

the collectibles world “all shook

“Clinton himself may have pro

stamps by frequently invoking
Elvis’ name in his campaign
speeches and even going so far as
to hire an Elvis impersonator to
accompany him at many of his
campaign stops,” stated John Van
Emden of the International Col

stamps. “I don’t know if Bob Dole
has checked into the Heartbreak
Hotel over this yet, but it seems
thatall collectors are talking about
now is Clinton and these stamps!”
Experts are already predicting
that in the near future these
stamps will be far more sought
after and desirable than the U.S.
Elvis stamp, the most popular col
