Freedom Under Fire
Jailhouse confession controversy
Syndicated by The Rutherford
Institute
Something was weighing
heavily on the mind of Conan
Hale. ..
Believed to be linked to the
murder of three teenagers in
Lane County, Oregon, Hale sat
in jail on a related charge of bur
glary. The 20-year-old inmate
had a Roman Catholic priest
summoned, and had a time of
confession through a plastic par
tition and a pair of telephone
handsets.
Later that day, Hale learned
that what was intended to be a
confession for God’s ears only,
along with the priest’s, was actu
ally heard and taped by investi
gators who wanted to use the
taped confession in court.
—4Understandably, the investi
gators’ actions weren’t well-re
ceived by the local Catholic arch- »
diocese. Roman Catholics view
confession to God through a priest
a sacred act deserving the ut

most confidentiality.
Yet the religious beliefs of the
inmate, the priest, and the church
seemed to be of little interest to
the investigators. To them, the
sacred act of confession was seem
ingly an opportunity for eaves
dropping.
Concerned with the religious
rights of this inmate, The
Rutherford Institute offered its
legal assistance to the inmate’s
attorney. The point is that Ore
gonlaw allows jail conversations
to be taped without the consent
of anyone involved, except for
attorney and client conversa
tions.
However, a conflicting state
law also guarantees the confi
dentiality of conversations be
tween clergy and parishioners.
In response to public outcry, the
district attorney apologized for
the secret taping and agreed not
to use it in court.

Did ‘Uncle Tom’ miss his own funeral?
By Camille Harper
New Vision Commentary
Whatever justification there
may have been for calling suc
cessful Black Americans “Uncle
Tom,” that justification is dead.
Uncle Tom belongs to the culture
of dependency; he belongs to the
welfare state thinking which el
evated criminal street gangs to
the level of folk heroes.
In fact, if anyone deserves the
title of Uncle Tom — and no one
does — members of street gangs
deserveit. These criminal groups
loiter or stay out of sight, commit
crime or don’t commit it (often on
other blacks), participate in pro
grams or ignore them, give help
or withhold it, according to their
own agenda for gaining power

No one should.
Uncle Tom is dead. He is a

AUGUSTA FOCUS August 29, 1996
Commission Council they voted
to assess this four-percent fran
chise fee on Jefferson EMC’s cus
tomers of Augusta-Richmond
County. The charge is identified
on their monthly bill as Code 17.
This hidden taximposed on these
residents was advised as “legal”
by James Wall, Augusta-Rich
mond County’s attorney,and who'
happened also to be Jefferson
EMC'’s attorney up until three
months ago. Why is this hidden
tax imposed on these selected
residents? To authorize Jefferson
EMC use of county right of ways.
Even though a study of these
right of ways has not been initi
ated, it is estimated that more
than 50 percent of the utility
poles are on private property,
and if a street light is on the pole,
the property owner is billed sep
arately on theirproperty taxbill...
