Changing Seasons
Are Car Care
Reminders
[National Car Care Month is a nationwide
effort by businesses, civic groups, the govern
ment and the mediato focus motorists' attention
on the need to maintain and repair their cars.
Although events are held throughout the year,
October is an ideal time for motorists to get their
cars ready before winter strikes. The following
article is courtesy of the Car Care Council.]
See if you can find the pattern here:
summertime means vacations and an oil
change. Fallmeans football, an oil change
and tire rotation. In the winter it's hot
cocoa and (you guessed it) an oil change.
Springtime reminds us of April showers,
and oil change and tire rotation.
If that exercise prompted you to think
about seasonal car maintenance, thenyou
and your car are headed in the right direc
tion. October is National Car Care Month,
when the Car Care Council encourages
motorists not only to winterize their cars
but alsoto develop the good maintenance
habit throughout the year.
As part of the campaign, National Car
Care Monthincorporates free vehiclecheck
lanes in participating communities. Last
year, in 35 cities throughoutthe U.S., thou
sands of motorists took their cars through
free check lanes. The results: nearly 9 out
of 10 failed some portion of the inspec
tions. A closer look revealsthat 30 percent
failed due to worri belts and hoses. Nearly
one out of three (32%) were found to have
low or dirty motor oil. It gets worse. Thirty
five percent failed the exhaust emissions
testand 59 percent had bald or underflated
tires.
‘These statistics help remind us to
change the oil each season and rotate the
tires every six months or as recommended
inthe owner's manual. But preventive main
tenance doesn't end there," says Donna
Wagner, Executive Director of National
CarCareMonth. "There's wheel alignment,
cooling system, brakes and other sys
tems and components needing periodic
attention.
The owner's manual is a good place to
start. Some car companies go so far as to
break their service recommendations
down month by month. The Council sug
gests reading the owner's manual care
fully then keepingtrack of all maintenance.
