ASU to present
free program on
Western sacred music
Augusta State University profes
sor emeritus William F. Toole, MM,
will present programtitled An Over-
Overview of Western Sacred Music at
1 p.m on Thursday, Feb. 20, in the
Towers of the university’s Walton
Way campus. Sponsored by the Hon
or Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the pro
gram is free,
Formerly a professor of music at
ASU until his retirement in 1995,
he taught at the university for 13
years. He is also the founder and
director of the Augusta Collegium
Musicum, a group of community
singers who previously were stu
dents at ASU. He was previously a
member ofthe faculty at theJulliard
School, where he also studied in a
professional program for three
years. He received a master of
music degree from Yale University
and a bachelor’s degree from
Wesleyan Conservatory.
Before joining academe, he per
formed onnumeroustelevisionshows
including the Martha Raye Show,
Studio One and Look Up and Live.
He also performed on a weekly vari
ety show during the 1950 s called The
Voice of Firestone.
A native Augustan, Mr. Toole has
been active in the city’s arts agencies
including the ballet, opera, sympho
ny, Gertrude Herbert Art Institute
and Sacred Heart Cultural Center.
He was organist for both Trinity-on
the-Hill United Methodist Church
and the Lutheran Church of Resur
rection. Healso was director of music
at Christ Episcopal Church in Oyster
Bay,N.Y.

Bishop Woodie W. White
Bishop Woodie W. White, world
renowned religious leader, will
speak at Paine College’s
Founders’ Day Convocation, Fri
day, February 7, at 10:30 a.m.
Convocation will be held in Gil
bert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel.
The event commemorates the col
lege’s 115th anniversary.
Bishop White is a 1958 gradu
ate of Paine College. White holds
a Master of Divinity Degree in
Theology from Boston Universi
ty. He has been active in the min-

top executive position. Shortly
after his election, he led a special
delegation for a meeting with
White House officials to convey
church concerns about violence in
the Middle East. Bishop White
has received honorary degrees
from eight colleges, including
Paine College.
Thursday, February6atlla.m.,
a pilgrimage will be led by Paine
College alumni to the grave sites
of the founders as a prelude to the
Founder’s Day Convocation.
Paine College is a church-relat
ed, four-year, residential, liberal
arts college. Its mission of provid
ing an education ofhigh quality in
a wholesome and nurturing envi
ronment has not changed sinceits
founding in 1882. Paine is sup
ported by the United Methodist
Church, the Christian Methodist
Episcopal Church, and the United
