;fid teacher. He describes her classroom as a
% ppy family” and says she encourages a positive
rattitude toward school and learning.
%. Ms. White graduated from Georgia Southern
%University in 1946 and teaches fourth grade at
3Goshen Elementary. In her essay, she shares a
“personal story about the impact of a teacher’s
words. Because ofher experiences, she says she will
always use sensitivity when speaking to her stu
dents. According to her principal Mrs. Harriet
Roney, Ms. Whitedevoteslonghourstoplanningand
preparation well beyond the required school day.
Award winners from each of the 50 states will be
announced in September 1997 and will be invited to
spend a weekend in Washington, D.C. at a U.S.
Department of Education symposium. In addition,
each winning teacher will receive a $1,500 cash
award and a special momento.
