1997 CSRA Black Expo
will include job fair
This year's CSRA Black Expo
has added a new twist—a job fair.
The CSRA Black Expo will take
place Saturday, April 12 at the
Augusta State University Athletic
Complex on Wrightsboro Road from
11-6 p.m.
We are currently seeking Geor

For the first time, Augusta State
University will dedicate a campus
building in honor of a local African
American.
Those who appreciate quality enjoy it responsibly.
Beginning this spring, the ASU
student center will officially be rec
ognized as the “Ike and Justine
Washington Hall.” The dedication
will honor local educators and civil
leaders Ike and Justine Washing
ton. The Washingtons will be both

“A recognition as big as this is
hard to describe,” said Dr. Ike
Washington. “My wife and I have
never strived for any type of speeial
recognition, but this' is probably
the greatest honor we’'vereceived,”
Washington added.
Other buildings at ASU bear the
names of past presidents or finan
cial benefactors, none of which have
been African Americans.
. Recently the Board of Regents
overtuned a policy that strictly
prohibits the namingof publicbuild
ing after living individuals.
Last fall, Dr. William A.
Bloodworth, president of ASU, ap
pointed a special committee of fac
ulty and alumni members to over
see the current renaming projects.
The Washingtons were chosen af
ter three months of research and
negotiations.
Both Drs. Washington served with
dedicationinthefieldofeducationin
the Augusta area as well as active
communityleaders. ‘
Retiringin 1975 with 38 yearsin
education, Ike Washington began
histeachingcareerat Peter H. Craig
School teaching seventh grade and

serving as assistant principal. In
1939 hemoved toC.T. Walker School
and remained as principal for 25
years. He later served five years as
principal of A.R. Johnson High
School andfive years at Lucy Laney.
Afterretirement, Washingtonserved
on the city council for 17 years.
_Justine Washington beganteach
ing in South Carolina and later
served for 22 years as Jeanes super
visor for 84 rural black schools. She
alsoservedon the Richmond County
Board of Education for 21 years,
including two years as vice president
and twoyears as president. Recently,
Washington retired as chair of the
Department of Education and Psy
chology at Paine College.
The Washingtons were also the
first joint recipients and first Afri
can Americanstoreceive the pres
tigious Liberty Bell Award which
recognized theirlong servicetothe
community.
“My wife and I are elated that
our relentless efforts in the educa
tion field and in the community
are coming to fruition,” Washing
ton said.
