What you should know about nosebleeds
Nosebleeds can be embarrassing and
even frightening, but they are rarely a
serious cause for concern. The amount of
bloodlost is usually quite small, even when
it seems to be gushing out. There are
several common causes of nosebleeds, in
cluding frequent nose-blowing or being in
an overheated room. (Warm air dries out
the lining of the nose, leaving the blood
vessels close to the surface vulnerable to
rupturing.) The first impulse upon getting
a nosebleed is often to tilt the head back,
but this is not the most effective approach.
Gently blow the nose, then sit up straight
and bend your head forward while pinch
ing the nostrils firmly shut for 10 minutes.

If bleeding persists, try spraying nasal decon
gestant and pinch the nose shut for another 10
minutes. Call your doctor if the bleeding hasn't
stopped after 20 minutes.
Ifyou have frequent nosebleeds, talk to your
doctor. They may be a sign of a more serious
underlying condition that requires medical
attention.
