Delegation is the key to growth
“If you want something done
right—doit yourself.” “It will take
me more time to explain it to some
one else, than ifldo it myself.”“lt’s
faster and easier for me todoit so
I'll take care of it.”
Sound familiar? Perfßctionism
isacommon trap: feelingasthough
you are the only person who can
work with a special client, handle
a ticklish situation or do the mar
ketingreports. On a surfacelevel,
these are all true statements. In
any single instance, it is faster to
handle it yourself. To assign it
requires that you clearly define the
task, train the person and commit
tobeingavailable to answer ques
tions. However, the more you del
egate, the more time you gain in
the future. Lack of delegation will
trap youin therole of doing versus
managing. Allowing others to par
ticipate in completing the work is
an excellent way to provide a
growthand learning opportunity.
It makes their job more interest
ing, challenging and fun.

particularly important if your em

The regular progress reports will

The final component, and for
many, the most difficult aspect of
delegation is personal self-re

Allow the employee freedom.
Delegation is a powerful manage

successfully completed builds a
greater level of confidence and al
lows your staff to handle more and
more responsibility. Ultimately, ef
fective delegation frees managers
and owners to focus on building
volume, keeping customers satis
fied and doing the creative tasks
that move an organization forward.

Q: Why are some people
afraid of computers
A: Some regard computers as
being more than they really are.
Generally, people often fear the
unknown and so theyavoidit. Some
people are nervous about the math
ematical sound of the word com
puter. It seems to suggest thatonly
a person with strong analytical
and quantitative skills can use it.
Some people are fearful of the whole
environment of computing. The
machinery looks intimidating to
them. There is a notion that com
puters are temperamental gadgets
and that once a glitch gets into a
computer system it may wreak all
kinds of havoc. Some people are
also nervous that computers might
be used to get themin some way—
by the Internal Revenue Service,
by credit bureaus orsomeinvaders
of privacy. Yet, others are worried
aboutcomputersinrelation totheir
jobs. Some peopledoubt they have
the skills to find jobs and keep
them out of the technological labor
market of the future.
Q: How do I get started with
using a computer?
A: To become familiar with the
terminology, with using a mouse,
keyboard and computer system,

Learning how to use acomputer

So there are many ways a person
can get involved in this informa

One is the fear of the machines
