“Mookie” Blaylock making all the
right moves on the NBA hardwood
“It’s‘Mookie’ Blaylock on the steal
and the lay-up for two, and the
Hawks have tied the game again!”
That call has been echoed more
than once thisseason by Atlanta’s
longtime play-by-play radio an
nouncer Steve Holman. But no
matter how many timeslocal NBA
observers may hear the call, too
many have been slow togive Daron
Oshay Blaylock his proper acco
lades. Maybe “Mocokie” himselfisto
blame for his slow risetosuperstar
status. After all, the 30 year old
seldom speaks with the media, signs
fewautographsand generally shuns
the spotlight. The native of Gar
land, Texas has always been a
private person off the hardwood,
stemming from his days playing
for former Oklahoma head coach
Billy Tubbs (now at Texas Chris
tian). But make no mistake,
“Mookie” Blaylock has arrived!
Without a doubt Blaylock is one of
the top five point guards in the
entire league. The eight-year vet
eran is even regarded by some as
the best one-on-one defenderin the
NBA. Yes, evenbetter than Seattle
All-Star Gary “the Glove” Payton.
But such complimentssimplydon’t
seem to faze Blaylock—not in the

that winning basketball games is
not the most important thingin his

Sofar this season, winningis some
thing the Hawks are doing quite
often, especially at the Omni.
Butquestions remain. Is“Mookie”
the man to lead the Hawks to the
promised land of an NBA Champi

Blaylock’s current deal endsin ‘9B,

with the stats he has posted so far
this season, the Hawks better be
ready for a financial bidding war.
Blaylock is shooting better this
season from the field (.431)thanat
any point of his pro career.
“Mookie’s” offensive numbers are
noteworthy (17.5 ppg/5.8 assists/
s.lrebounds), butit’shis defensive
skills and prowess that has At

year. Blaylock is averaging 2.63
steals per contest and the six-foot
one-inch point man has done what
Coach Lenny Wilkens has asked of
him...become aleaderon the floor.
The usually quiet observer is now
barking out plays, encouraging
teammates and admonishing those

defensive ends duringball games.
Every good NBA team of champi

added to his point guard skills this
season, and the payoff for the
Hawks hasbeen arecord-breaking
year for victories on the home floor.
This weekend will serve asa true
pre-playofftest for Atlanta as they
play host to Grant Hill and the
Detroit Pistons on Friday and the
New York Knicks on Saturday. If
they can get past both clubs with
victories, then their race to the
regular-season finish line appears
clear with seven games remaining
with only one contest against a
franchise with an above 500 record.
The goal for Atlanta is toovertake
the Pistonsin the Eastern Confer

court advantage in the first round
of the playoffs. Will that really
happen? If “Mookie” remains fo
cused and injuries are avoided, it
will! Count on it!
By the way. A friendly note to
Pete Babcock, Stan Kasten and the
rest of the Hawks top brass: With
theboss(HawksownerTed Turner)
clamoring for an NBA title, it would
be a smart move to sign “the
Mookster” to the financial deal he
wants—now—and not let another
budding superstar flee the Atlanta
