Q: How do I know what kind
of computer to buy?
A: Maybe you have already done
some thinking and have decided
that a personal computer offers
advantages. Now what? You can
start by talking to other personal
computer owners and how they
got started and how to avoid pit
falls. Or, you can read some com
puter magazines, especially ones
with evaluations and ratings to
get a feel for what is available.
Next, visit several dealers. Don’t
be afraid to ask questions. You
are considering a major purchase,
so plan to shop around.
Q: Should I buy now or later?
A: People who are interested
in buying a computer may delay
their purchase because the price

television for web-site layouts
Attempting to help consumers
navigate the World Wide Web
while also providing a strong base
for advertisers, two of the largest
online search sites are moving to
ward something that looks more
like television and newspapers.
Excite, Inc., a popular search
engine company which now calls
itself an “Internet navigation net
work,” announced Wednesday it
would institute what it called a
“channel model” beginning in
April.
Currently, users come to the site
and find lists of things like colum
nists, software, news and prod
ucts.
The new layout will be more like
a television or newspaper, where
all the sports information will be
in one place, all the arts in an
other.
The opening screen will initially
feature a list of 14 channels cover
ing such topics as Entertainment,

is too high or because they think
more sophisticated computers
are coming soon. Prices are cer
tainly variable and it is quite
true that you may get a bargain
by waiting. And it is also true
that something will no doubt
come along in a year or two (or
even sooner) that will improve
on the existing technology in
some way. Yet clearly, the longer
you wait to buy, the longer you
miss out on acquiring experience
and expertise with personal com
puters. And, of course, you miss
out on the usefulness and fun.
Certainly, if you want a machine
for word processing or for busi
ness-related purposes, there is
no point waiting.

click on atopic, much as they would
click to the History channel or the
SciFi channel on television.
Not only will the new frame
work make it easier for users, it
will also make it easier for Excite
to sell advertising. For example, if
all users interested in sports
memorabilia have togo toone front
page, there will be an opportunity
to display ads there tailored to the
group.
“With channels, Excite has
achieved a targeted model that
will work for audiences the way
that cable television does today,”
Joe Kraus, senior vice president
said from the company’s Moun
tain View, Calif. offices.

or hard disk drive) and printer.
Urless you know someone who can
help you out with the technical ex
pertise, you are probably best ad
vised tolook for a packaged system;
that is, one in which the above
components (with the exception of
theprinter) are assembled and pack
aged by the same manufacturer.
This will give some assurance that
thevarious components will work
together.
