Edward R. Asbridge, manager of
the Augusta Mall JCPenney, said
that the awards demonstrate the
company’s belief in the value of
volunteer efforts for the social
and physical well being of the
community. He said that com
munity service has been a part of
the company’s business tradition
since the company’s founder,
James Cash Penney, opened his
first store in 1902 and called it
“The Golden Rule”.
“From the earliest days,”
Asbridge said, “Mr. Penny told
his associates and store manag
ers to be guided by the Golden
Rule, not only in the conduct of
their business, but as citizens of
the communities they served. He
believed in giving back to the
community and in the concept of
people helping each other. These
awards continue that tradition.”
Asbridge also said that awards
have a dual objective of honoring
significant volunteer service and
providing support to worthy or
ganizations. There will be a total
of seven grants to be awarded to
individuals who have been cited
for outstanding volunteer service.
All winners and finalists will be
selected by a panel of representa
tives from the community.

dent of the United Way of the
