School Board approves distinctive
diploma for students who work hard
ATLANTA
(AP) Students beginning high
school in Georgia next year will be
eligible for a distinctive diploma if
they keep their grades up for four
years and take extra courses.
The state school board Monday
approved the new diploma pro
gram, which will allow students
who meet the requirements to re
ceive a seal of distinction on their
diplomas.
To qualify, they must complete
two more courses than required
for the standard college-prepara
tory dipioma, choosing the extra
courses from language arts, math,
science, social studies or foreign
languages.
Safe Kids awarded bike helmet grant
Safe Kids of East Central Geor
gia(Safe Kids) hasbeen awarded a
$2,000 bike helmet law enforce
ment/compliance grant by the Na
tional SAFE KIDS campaign.
Safe Kids applied for the grant
because although Georgia’s bike
helmet law states that children
and adults are required to wear a
helmet while riding a bike, there
are no provisions for enforcing the
They would need to earn 24
Carnegie Units during their high
school careers instead of 22. A
Carnegie Unit is 150 hours of in
struction, or about one school
year’s worth of instruction in a
subject. -
In addition, they must accumu
late a 3.0 grade point average —
the same average required for
Georgia students to qualify for a
lottery-funded HOPE scholarship.
Before adopting the diploma
program, the board heard arts
advocates warn that it might
present a problem for students
gifted in music, drama and other
arts. Such students might be forced
law. The coalition will use the
money obtained form the grant to
fund a positive incentive program
to assist with enforcement efforts
of Georgia’s bike helmet law.
Plansare underway to post signs
about wearing helmets at the Au
gusta Canal and other high traffic
bike areas, present school educa
tion programs and sponsor a pub
lic service campaign.
to abandon arts courses, which
are generally electives, in order to
achieve the right mix of required
creditsfor the special diploma, they
argued.
In part to help those students,
the board agreed to allow eighth
grade algebra to count as one of
the four math units all college
bound students will be required to
take beginning next year.
Since that will count as a re
quired course rather than an elec
tive, students will have an extra
elective that could be used for fur
ther instruction in the arts, said
School Board Chairman Johnny
Isakson.
Toaccomplish this agenda, Safe
Kids will be partnering with the
