ATLANTA
(AP) The head of the graduate school
at a traditionally black university in
Virginia has been named president of
Savannah State University, whose
embattled president is resigning.
Bypassing the normal search pro
cess and mev:ug with extraordinary
speed, the Board of Regents on
Wednesday named Carlton E. Brown
to succeed John Wolfe.
Like Hampton University, where
Brown now serves, Savannah Stateis a
traditionally black school.
Brown, a native of Macon, agreed to
serve for at least the next five years, as
did Joseph H. “Pete” Silver, who was
named the school’s vice president for
academic affairs. Silver currently is an
assistant vice chancellor for Georgia’s
university system.

the time for healing,” Chancellor

Stephen Portch said during an an
nouncement of Brown’s appointment
in Savannah.
“I don’t want to go through a tor
tured search, finally hire a new presi
dent and then, in a matter of months,
start to hear protests of various types.
For this has been the pattern and it has
not served this institution well,” he
said.
Campus rumors to the contrary,
Portch said, there are no plans to close
the school or to convert it to a two-year
institution. “There is a plan to have
Savannah State University get bigger
and better ... There is a plan to bring
stability to Savannah State University.”
Wolfe, who had been president of
the school since 1993, had been under
fire from faculty and students since last
year. He announced this week he is
stepping down July 1 to become an
associate vice chancellor in the univer
sity system.
