Spring into
-
spring safely
So you’re itching to get outside
and spruce up your lawn or takein
the springtime sights from your
relaxing perch on the balcony. Be
fore you throw open the windows,
fertilize your grass and plants or
bring a fresh bouquet of daffodils
inside, remember that many of the
beauties of spring may be hazard
ous to children.
Enjoy asafer spring this year by
observing the following tips:
-Falls account for approximately
one-third of childhood emergency
room visits. Window fall-related
deathsriseduring spring and sum
mer. Install window guards on all
windows above the ground floor,
unless the window is a fire escape
route. Or, only open windows from
the top. Window screens are not a
barrier and cannot protect a child
from a fall.
-Always supervise children while
ondecksandbalconies. Somestores
offer special netting to serve as a
barrier to falls, but it cannot re
place adult supervision. After the
backyard barbecueisover, keepall
doorsleadingtobalconiesand decks
locked.
-Injuries from lawnmowers and
debris flying out from them can be
disabling and disfiguring. Make
certain your children are inside
before starting your mower and
always follow the manufacturers
safety guidelines printed in your
owner’s manual. Never allow a
cnild torideonaridinglawnmower,
even ifaccompanied by an adult.
-Alwaysbe alert for children while
operatingoutdoor powerequipment.
Wearing headphones prevents you
from hearing a warning from an
otheradultthatachildis approach
ing you.
-Keep all poisonous lawn care
products out of a child’s reach in
locked cabinets. Ifyou suspect your
child has come in contact with
something poisonous, call the local
poison control centerimmediately.
-Keep abottle of syrup ofipecacin
a convenient place. It can be pur
chased over the counter at most
pharmacies. Use it only if your
poison control center advises you to
useit toinduce vomiting, and only
in the prescribed amount.
‘Teach your children to enjoy
flowers, plants and shrubs by look
ingatthem, nottouchingoreating
them. Many are poisonousinclud
ing azalea, boxwood, daffodil, hya
cinth, hydrangea and morning
glory. Know the names of the plants
in your yard so if you suspect that
your child has eaten a poisonous
plant you can tell the poison contro!
center exactly what your child has
swallowed.

mendously, there is a need for ex
tended bus service during such a
highly attended event such as the
Masters. Many non-golfing guests
cannot easily afford expensive taxi
