APRIL 17, 1997 AUGUSTA FOCUS
Managing the diversity of workforce 2000
When you step into your work
place, doesn’t it look different
than it did just a few years ago?
Nationally, these are some of the
changes we are experiencing.
Women and minorities will com
prise almost two-thirds of all new
entrantsinto the U.S. workforce
between now and the year 2000.
There are 45 million physically
and mentally challenged—but
able—workers who are entering
this workforce. An estimated 10
percent of the population is gay,
lesbian or bisexual. Customers,
colleagues and staff will be made
up of women, people of differ
ences and people of color.
America was once a microcosm
of Europe. Now it is a microcosm
of the world. We can no longer
presume that the typical U.S.
citizen traces his or her descent
in a direct line from Europe.
Whatever industry you work in,
regardless of your position, ten
ure or years on the job, your
work environment is rapidly
changing. Managing and incor
porating this diversity is both
our challenge and our opportu
nity.
What is meant by diversity? It
is most commonly thought of in
ethnicorracial terms, sometimes
by gender, age or differences in
physical ability. The wider view
of diversity is more comprehen
sive. The concept incorporates
differences in gender, age,
ethnicity, race, religion, physi
cal or mental ability, military
status and sexual orientation.
People have other differences,
too: lifestyle, thinking styles, cul
ture and educational level. We
vary in the ways we process in
formation, show respect to au
thority, learn, think and reach
agreements. To survive and to
prosper, we must at least learn
to be more tolerant of these dis-

Sometimes the little things can
make all the difference. At work,
does your organization celebrate

which fall in the December/Janu

building better relationships.
Asking is one part of the equa
tion, the other is accepting the
resulting information.
The successful person able to
navigate in and with this new
workforce, will make fewer as
sumptions. There is no reason to
suppose that everyone is mar
ried or wants to be, or is hetero
sexual for that matter. We don’t
all eat the same things. All veg
etarians are not the same, nor
are they vegetarian for the same
reasons.
Our changing mosaic is excit
ing. Diversity is here to stay.
And our individual efforts to
ward working together will de
termine our status as a nation in
theinternational marketplace of
the future. The challenge seems
overwhelming, but it need not
be. Don’t expect new languages
overnight. Start where you are.
Get to know the different people
around you. Individual one-to
one efforts really do matter. By
embracing our differences, we
can all make a difference.

The Internet: what
it does, how it works
The Internet has revolutionized
the way computers are being used.
A simple definition for the
Internet: it is a gathering of infor
mation that can be shared by ev
eryone. Think of it as likened to a
public library that you can access
from anywhere there is a com
puter and phone service connec
tion. You can access not only infor
mation, but services as well. Some
commonly used services include
shopping, banking, education,
travel, product ordering informa
tion, sending electronic mail (e
--mail) and many other services.
Inthe early days of the Internet,
mostly researchers from govern
mental institutions and colleges
used it. Today, there are many
thousands of personal and com
mercial users on the Internet. A
number of different services have
been developed over the years to
facilitate the sharing of informa
tion that can be accesses by mil
lions from around the globe.
How does it work? A person only
needs to have a personal computer
with the proper software to con
nect. There are many local service
providers that offer a connection
to the Internet. A service provider
is a business that charges a usage
feetoconnect ausertotheinternet
service. Once connected, you can
create your own personal Home
Page that identifies your business
