Bravo named Sam Walton Fellow

Ricardo Bravo, assistant profes
sor, has been named a Sam M.
Walton Free Enterprise Fellow for
the Students in Free Enterprise
(SIFE) team at Paine College. Ac
tive on more than 500 college cam
puses nationwide, SIFE is a non
profit organization that works in
partnership with business and
higher education to help students
take what they’re learning in the
classroom and apply it to real-life
situations. They also use their
knowledge to better their commu
nities through educational outreach
projects.
Under the direction of Ricardo
Bravo, the Paine College SIFE team
presented their educational out
reach projects at the 1997 SIFE
Regional Exposition held on April
8, 1997 in Atlanta, Ga. The team
received Rookie of the Year and
Regional Champions. Teams were
Jjudged onthe effecitveness on their
projects during a 25-minute pre
sentation and were evaluated on
creativity and innovation, results
of education programs, success in
utilizing resources and documen
tation of activities. Regional cham
fions named at twelve competi
ions held around the country will
present their projects at the SIFE
International Exposition and Ca
reer Opportunity Fair in Kansas
City, Mo., May 18 - 20.
H2Fuel Bus comes to Augusta
The newest addition to Augusta-
Richmond County’s public transit
fleet promises tobe the forerunner
orclean, environmentally-friendly,
energy-efficient transportation ve
hicles for the next century. The
H2Fuel Bus is the product of a
technology transfer and verifica
tion pilot project sponsored prima
rily by the U.S. Department of
Energy and the Augusta-Richmond
County Public Transit, and was
developed by a partnership of rep
resentatives from industry, gov
ernment and research institutions.
This prototype hydrogen-fueled,
near-zero pollution public transit
bus uses a metal hydride storage
system developed at DOE’s Savan

The fellowship was created in
1990 by the Wal-Mart Foundation
andisnamed for Samuel M. Walton,
founderand chairman of Wal-Mart
Stores, Inc. “The Sam Walton Fel
lows are America’s most effective
teachers of free enterprise. They
are teaching the Sam Waltons of
the 21st century,” said Jack Kahl,
chairman ofthe Board of SIFE and
chairman of Cleveland-based
Manco, Inc. “We are proud that the
Walton family invited SIFE to use
Mr. Walton’s nametogive the Free
Enterprise Fellows a standard by
nah River Site and provided by
Westinghouse Savannah River
Company. The storage system al
lows hydrogen to be stored in an
inherently safe solid form.
Partnering with DOE and WSRC
in the project are Southeastern
Technology Center, Hydrogen Com
ponents, Inc., Georgia Tech Re
search Institute, the Education Re
search and Development Associa
tion of Georgia Universities, Blue
Bird Body Company and Augusta-
Richmond County Public Transit.

More than 300 Sam Walton Fel
lowstrain and motivate over 30,000
SIFE team members annually. In
addition to being recognized as a
Sam Walton Fellow, each qualify
ing faculty advisor receives a cash
honorarium.

With its arrival in Augusta, the
H2Fuel Bus becomes a part of the
Augusta-Richmond County Public
Transit fleet where, afteradditional
operational testing, it will be put
into normal transit service with
initial routes along Broad Street
and Washington Road. The H2F uel
Bus Project partners plantoobtain
valuable operating data through
typical fleet operation and demon
strations. Additional appearances
at special events and in educa
tional programs arealsoplannedto
assist in gaining publicrecognition
of hydrogen as a safe, clean-burn
ing and renewable energy source.
