The perils of perfectionism
Being described as a perfection
ist often carries a positive conno
tation. It implies high standards
and a keen attention to detail. If
you are on the receiving end, you
can generally count on work being
provided that is of excellent qual
ity. If you are the carrier of that
title, however, it is very likely that
you pay a high price. Perfection is
often coupled with a strong ten
dency to obsess over things and be
overly compulsive. This can be
unproductive, frustrating and of
ten unhealthy.
Traits
Perfectionists have difficulty in
recognizing when enough is
enough. Reasonable performance
is never quite good enough. Since
a job can always be improved, too
much timeis spent polishing things
that do not deserve the extra at
tention. Perfectionism and a pur
suit of excellence are not the same
thing. Having high standards is
fine. Wanting others to perform
well is also fine, but the trap for
perfectionists is always having to
prove oneself over and over again.
A ten-year study of more than
9,000 managers conducted by
Human Synergistics, found in 1994
that 18 percent of the managers
were perfectionists. They hada 75
percent higher incidence of illness
than their better-adjusted office
mates.
Perfectionists have difficulty
establishing clear goals, for them
selves or for others. As managers,
giving control and authority to
other people is quite difficult.
Delegating, sharing work and let
ting go is a challenge. Trust that
others can perform to their exact
ing standards is hard to earn.
Perfectionistsare very, very hard
onthemsclves, and are very unfor
giving when they make a mistake.
When others make one, they are

that the perfectionist is the bottle

Perfectionists, by wanting ev

commit themselves, and as a con

When perfectionists hire others,
they often hire people who are like
themselves, creating challenges
and competitions that are extra

Breaking through
If you identify yourself as a per
fectionist, what can you do about
it? Remember that habits are hard
to break, so start slowly. Begin to
recognize the difference between
an acceptable level of performance
and a perfect level of performance.
Make a list of these tasks at work
(or at home) that you do regularly.
List those that by results or conse
quences truly deserve excellence.
Note the ones that can be done to
a lower standard but still be ac
ceptable. Become aware of ex
tremist thinking: if it is not abso
lutely the best, it is terrible. Rec
ognize and begin to appreciate
middle ground.
Set attainable, reasonable goals
for others and for yourself. That
includes going home earlier in the
evenings, and stoppingon the third

of the sixth. Getting someone else

U.S. senior citizens are
targets of telephone scam
The Better Business Bureau
and the U.S. Customs Service
warn senior citizens not to fall
prey to a recent international
telemarketing scam. Senior citi
zens throughout Canada and the
United States are receiving calls
from phony telemarketers, who
have obtained their phone num

forms.
The telemarketers are identi
fying themselves as U.S. Cus

told that they won SIOO,OOO or
more in a sweepstakes drawing
and that they must send a per
centage of the amount they won
to pay the “duty” or “tax” on the
winnings before they can be re
leased. The victims are instruct
ed to send a cashier’s check, via
overnight mail delivery, to a fic
titious addressin Montreal. Once
the scam artists receive the track
ing number from the victim, the
money is then redirected to a
different mail drop.
As if that’s not enough, many
victims are being taken a second
time by the same scam artists
who call back and identify them
selves as a business which helps
people recover money after be
ing scammed. The victims are
then asked for another several
hundred dollars to help recover
the lost money. Of course, no
money is ever returned.
If you are contacted by some
one who claims to be a U.S. Cus
