The power of Naylor’s spirit mani
festsitself in her fictional worlds in
aunique way: although none ofthe
novels is a sequel of any other, all
are interconnected by some signifi
cant, yet understated, link. The
militant middle-class Kiswana and
the lesbian couple who reside in
Brewster Place are refugees of Lin
den Hills. Willa Nedeed of Linden
Hills is a relative of Mama Day’s
niece, Cocoa. Cocoa’s husband,
George, had pre-natal origins in
Bailey’s Case. Naylor says she in
tentionally included each link to
motivate herself to write the next
novel.
“I wanted to write four novels
that were loosely interconnected in
some way. I knew, as I was work
ing, that [a particular link] would

Art celebrates 60th anniversary
with special exhibition
The Gertrude Herbert Institute
cf Art is pleased to announce its
60th Anniversary Exhibition and
Opening Celebration which will be
held on Friday, May 9, 1997, from
7-11p.m., at 506 Telfair Streetin
Augusta.
Twenty-nine works of art have
been selected from proposals sub
mitted by 60 individual artists for
this outstanding exhibition. The
exhibition wasselected by a panel
ofthree jurorsincluding: Dr. Wil
liam Eiland, director of the Geor
gia Museum of Art; Albert F.
Cheatham, AIA, an Augusta-based
architect; and Philip Morsberger,
the William S. Morris Eminent
Scholar in Art at Augusta State
University. Local and regional
artists were invited to submit a
proposal for a work of art that
would clearly addressthe architec
ture or architectural detail of the
historic 1818 “Ware’s Folly,” home
ofthe Instituteor works that would
depictorinterpret the history and
“spirit” of the Gertrude Herber.
Institute of Art. Proposals were
submitted in all media including
painting, sculpture, ceramics, pho
tography, drawing, water media,
printmaking and mixed media.

Psi Omega to hold
annual talent hunt
The Psi Omega chapter of Omega Psi Phi
fraternity, Inc. will hold its Annual Talent
Hunt, Sunday, May4,at4 p.m.inthe T.W.
Josey Band Complex. Trophies will be pre
sented to thefirst and second place winners,
who will represent Psi Omega at the State
Talent Hunt in Valdosta, in October.
The event is free to the public and all
Omega men. Refreshments will be served.
Dr. Arthur Shawisthe local Talent Hunt
chairman. Dr. Charles Smith is the State
Director ofthe Talent Hunt and Basileus of
the Psi Omega chapter.

speaker next week at Augusta State
University’s Sand Hills Writers
Conference, which will be held
Thursday, May 8, through Satur
day, May 10, in Galloway Hall on
the university campus. Her key
note address will be at 11 am.
Thursday, and she will give a read
ing — an excerpt from The Men of
Brewster Place — that evening at 8
p.m. Naylor, who was born in New
York City but has family ties in
Mississippi, says the theme of her
address will focus on the impor
tance of writers “sinkingtheir roots
downinto the experiencesthat they
know.”

sary celebration will be used for
further preservation of the
Institute’s historic building.

and the Georgia Council for the
Arts through the appropriations
of the Georgia General Assembly.
Aportionof the Institute’sgeneral
operating funds is provided by the
Greater Augusta Arts Council
through appropriations from Au
gusta-Richmond County. Hours
at the Institute are 10 a.m. to 5
p.m., Tuesdaythrough Friday and
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Satur
day. Donations of $2 for adults
and $1 for children and senior
citizens are encouraged.
