Walton volunteers recognized during
National Volunteers Week
Walton Rehabilitation Hospital cel
ebrated National Volunteer Week
with an awards ceremony Thurs
day, April 17, during aluncheon at
Sixth at Watkins. Volunteers and
staffgathered torecognize the many
hours of service that this dedicated
group contributed during 1996. Col
lectively, our volunteers donated
nearly 5,500 hours working with
our clinical and non-clinical staff,
which translatesintoadollar value
of nearly $40,000.
Qualifying for recognition pins
were Theresa Gauger, 100 hour pin;
Thomas James, 100 hour pin; Jo
seph Logan, 500 hour pin; Margaret
Lorenz, 100 hour pin and Betty
Stacy, 100 hour pin.

Notably, Rubye Burton, Becky
Guillebéau, Hiroko Hogarth, Naomi
Monge, Beth Rogers and Christi
Epps have all contributed over 500
hours of service.
Highlightingthe awardsceremony
was the presentationofthe Doris L.
Burnstein Volunteer Excellence
Award, established in honor of
Walton’s first volunteer. Both staff
and volunteers were given the op
portunity to vote for the volunteer
whomostdisplaysthe fourvaluesof
our Diamond Deed Award: compas
sion, teamwork, dedicationand pro
fessionalism. Volunteers receiving
orees were volunteers who have
served 50 hours or more in 1996
andindividuals whohave worked a
cumulative total of up to 48,890
hours since they began volunteer
ing at the hospital.
Over the past years, volunteer
roleshave changed from traditional
ones, such as escorting patients
and assisting in recreation activi
ties, tonontraditional assignments
such as hospice care and working
nearly 25,000 moredirectorieslocally
than it did a year ago.
“Weprinted 154,728 copies of this
directorylastyear,” said Bryan Fos
ter, BAPCO’s vice president of mar
keting. “This time, however, weare
proud to say that the growth of the
Augustaareanecessitated us print
ing 178,023 copies.”

Becky Guillebeau was genuinely
surprised when her name was an
nounced as she was presented with
the prestigious Doris L. Burnstein
Volunteer Excellence Award.
Through the generosity of Doris’
son, David, a SIOO donation was
madetothecharity oftherecipient’s
choice. Guillebeau selected the
American Cancer Society, and ac
cordingly,adonationwillbemadein
herhonor.
The following day, a hospital-wide
reception washeldinthe Walton Case
to allow the staff to express their
appreciation of our volunteers and to
congratulate Guillebeauonheraward.
