Muhammad speaks at Nation
of Islam men’s training class

AUGUSTA FOCUS Staff Writer
On April 26, the local Nation of
Islam (N. 0.1. hosted a men’s
training class. Captain Curtis
Muhammad was keynote speaker
ofthe evening.
Capt. Muhammad, based in At
lanta, traveled to Augusta hoping
tohelp Louis Farrakhan reach the
black community. He represents
the Supreme CaptainoftheN.O.l.,
Abdul SharriffMuhammad, in the
southern region. Capt.
Muhammad’s message challenges
black men in Augusta to take re
sponsibility fortheirlives and com
munities.
“I’'ve come here to talk to black
men regardless of their faith— to
encourage these black men to re
spect the value of life. God has
given usour purpose here and our
plan in this life,” he said.

Captain Curtis Muhammad
the N.O.l.,became a Muslim after
leaving the U.S. Marine Corps in
1972. He’sheld several posts dur
ing his tenure with the N.0.1L
Beginningas a private soldier, go
inginto the ministry and eventu
ally climbing the ranks to become
aCaptain. He has worked all over
the U.S. from California to Geor
gia serving the N. 0.1. and train
ing black men.
Capt. Muhammad encourages
men to followthrough on God’s will
puttingitintoaction. “Thisis about
ourselves and God, having him as
the center of our lives, he said. “Do
we plan to make a mark ora name
for ourselves of righteousness in
thiscreation?”
The plight of black men in
America, according to Capt.
Muhammad, isduetotheirinabil
ity todecide whetheror not to take
arighteous path.
“Wehave todecide if there will
be war or peace against
unrighteousness. We must sub
mit to God if there is to be peace.
It’s time to get serious, it’s time to
make war or peace,” he said.
The Augusta N. 0.1., under the
leadership of Minister Duane
Muhammad, is located at 1800
Broad Street. The mosque hosts
men’s training sessions on

is extended to both members and
non-members of the N. 0.1. in ef
forts to reach black men from ev
ery walk of life.
Stucents participate in state VOCA competition
T.W.Josey Comprehensive High
School had seven students partici
pated in the April 18 State VOCA
club contests. Contest winners in
cluded Morlinda Anderson, first place
for horticulture; Shaconda Nichols,
first place for cosmetology; Clavetta
Wright, first place for careermanual
(Ob/GYN);Dyana Adams, fifth place
for publicspeaking; Tywanda Baker,
fifth place for VOCA school project;
Edward Anthony, honorable men
tion for most improved young man
and Candice Brown, honorable men
tion for job interview. g

level.

students, their accomplishments,
their dedication and hard work.
Tank closure demonstrated at SRS
On Thursday, May 1, the Savan
nah River Site demonstrated clos
inganow-empty high-level liquid
waste tank, the first tank closure
of this nature in the nation.
This milestone marked a major
step forward by beginning the sta
