Rodman headed to scrap yard in off season
Make no mistake. The Chicago
Bulls will have a new look next
season, Lots of new faces, new
attitudes, lower salaries, and “pos
sibly,” even a few new coaching
philosophies. The handwriting is
all over the locker room' wall.
Chicago fans will have to bid a
fond farewell to forward Dennis
Eodman (the man of a thousand
hair colors and dresses).
Fodman’s antics, on and off the
court, have become too much of a
distraction (and embarrassment)
to Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf.
Jordan has made mention that he
wants to keep this team intact,
but his “Air-ness” seldom men
tions Rodman as being an intri
cate cog in MJ’s plans to keep the
team together ... or else. The “or
elie” part of this equatio | by the
way represents MdJ's implied
threat, to retire, and walk away
from the game, again.
To really put this Chicago di
lemma in proper prospective, “The
Worm” must turn. Either towards
retirement, a budding action
movie career, or perhaps Orlando.
Yes ... rumors from the land that
once was the dunking domain of
crorent Lakers All Star Shaquille
(» Jeal, have Rodman landing in
the heart of the Sunshine State
as a 4 sixth man offthe bench. With
67-yc ir-old coaching veteran
(""uck Daly taking over the reins
of the Magic, Rodman’s original
father figure may have an oppor
tunity to devise a plan to bring
oo of the game’s top rebounders
to Florida to add some punch to
an injury-riddled front line. An

pecially if Rodman says yes to a
substantial pay cut in an effort to
rejoin his former Detroit Piston
mentor. The jury is still out on
this option though. Daly would
have to convince good friend Rich
DeVos (Orlando’s owner and
Amway multi-millionaire mag
nate), that he can still “control”
the volatile Rodman. Bad PR in
America’s number one family
tourist stop is bad for business,
and the Magic front office knows
it. Remember, these are the same
fans that turned their back on
Shaq after word leaked out that
O’Neal had no plans to marry the
woman that had his child out of
wedlock. That blowup (between
Shaq and the Orlando fans) was
the first of three that led him to
bolt to LA last year, without any
hesitation. ,
Orlando fancies itself a high
brow, morally correct, growth
community, where family values
are still the rule instead of the
exception. If Rodman has a prob
lem with the citizens of Salt Lake
City, just imagine the peril he
could possibly face in O-town!
Daly must also figure out the an
swer to another big question.
Could Rodman fit in, and share
the spotlight, with All Star Penny
Hardaway? That’s a gamble
Orlando’s top brass (which now
includes NBA/ABA legend Julius
Erving) will have to be sold on
before giving Daly the green light
to pull off this deal in the off
season. Either way you cut it,
Mickey and Minnie better be on
the lookout just in case “The
Worm” has plans on invading
their Magic Kingdom, dressed as
a “fairy” of course.
Holliman headed to “The
House” in *97!
Former T.W. Josey football
standout Rod Holliman will line
up with the Maroon Tigers of
Morehouse next season to.the de
light of area alums and new head
coach Doug Williams. Holliman,
who spent last season as a fresh
man redshirt at The Citadel, was
an All State and All Area running
back during the 1995 prep sea
son, in which the Eagles captured
the Georgia AAA state crown af
ter posting a 15-0 record.
Holliman will fit in well on the
Atlanta campus where academ
ics clearly come first. The ’95
WBBQ Player of the Year is an
excellent studentand an aspiring
poet. In fact, Holliman has al
ready written and published his
first book of poetry. Not bad for a

People with disabilities can
enjoy sports and recreation’
HOUSTON
Adisability does not havetostand
inthe way of participationin sports
and recreational activities. Sports
and recreation have become an
important lifestyle choice for people
with all degrees of disabilities.
“Some people with disabilities
find inspiration from mountain
climbing,” said Lex Frieden, pro
fessor of physical medicine and re
habilitation at Baylor College of
Medicinein Houston. “Others may
enjoy playing board games with
family and friends.”
Recreation does not have tomean
exercise. It is getting away from
work and finding things to do that
caninspire people both mentally and
physically. Building recreation into
the lives of people with disabilities
often begins during rehabilitation:
“Most rehabilitation facilities
programsincorporate recreation
therapists who are skilled at teath
ing people proper techniques at
approaches to recreation,” sai
Frieden. 1
“There is a whole range of rec
ational therapy, including sports,
said Frieden. “We try to mate
individuals with activities the
enjoyed before they were injured;
Recreational activities are im
portant, said Frieden, since th
help improve self-esteem and p
vide a sense of accomplishment;
“Adisability doesn’thave tom
the end of an active life,” he safd.
“With proper guidance and modifi
cations, many people can partiei
pate in virtually any activity.” <’
