ASU recognizes outstanding and
long-time faculty and staff
Augusta State University re
cently recognized outstanding fac
ulty and staff. Faculty noted for
recently received awards include:
*Dr. Ralph Walker, professor
of political science and director of
the university’s Research Center.
He had recently been presented
the Richard S. Wallace Distin
guished Service Award.
*Professor Brian Rust, assis
tant professorofart. He had been
presented with the Louis K. Bell
Research Award.
*Dr. Marya M. Dußose, associ
ate chair of the Department of
Languages, Literature and Com
munications and associate pro
fessor of English. She was pre
sented with the Outstanding Fac
ulty Member Award.
*Dr. Ed Cashin Jr., director of
the ASU Center for the Study of
Georgia History. He has been
named the recipient of the Hugh
McCall Award. This honor is con
ferred biennially and it recognizes
distinction in the writing of Geor
gia history.
Staff members also were hon
ored with third quarter awards
by the ASU Staff Advisory Coun
cil. Ms. Thuy Nguyen, a labora
tory coordinator in the Depart
ment of Chemistry and Physics
since 1992, was the recipient of
the Staff Excellence Award. Mr.
Max Brown, head of grounds
maintenance, was first runner
up and Mrs. Elise Little, library
assistant IV at the Circulation
Sunset Ave. to become Essie Mcintyre Bivd.
The Augusta-Richmond Coun
ty Commission approved on Tues
day the motion to rename Sunset
Avenue (Martin Luther King
Blvd.) to (Olive Road) Essie
Mclntyre Blvd.
Concerns for the amount of
money the city must spend to
rename the street were consid
ered by the commission. “We
looked at the dollar amount and
there is no way to put an exact

Shaw also received an honor

of Charlotte, N.C. and C. Tho
mas Wyche of Greenville, S.C.
Mrs. Gambrell is a member of
the Belk family, for whom the
chain of stores is named, and
serves as officer and director of

Germany, was awarded the pres
tigious Scholarship Cup, given
each year to the graduating se

average. Ms. Kiessling compiled
a perfect 4.0 average during her
time at Furman.
General Excellence Awards,
given by the Furman faculty to
the outstanding senior man and
woman went to Elaine Arrington
and Warren Kinghorn, both of
Greenville.
Also presented were two Alester
G. Furman Jr. and Janie Earle
Furman awards for meritorious
teaching and one for meritorious
advising. The teaching awards
went to Dr. John D. Batson, asso
ciate professor of psychology, and
