Women are just as capable as men

Men and women cannot live separate lives
As apeople, men and women live
together in society. There is no
possible way toseparate them from
one another. The proposal of some
members of Congress to segregate
women and men by sex in the mili
tary is ridiculous.
The military represents the men
and women who are willing to put
their lives on the line in defense of
thiscountry. Inatimeofwar, these
men and women will be on the
battlefield together. Why separate

The military should be for men
It iL my opinion that the United
States military should recruit men
only. There are many problems
that occur when male and female
recruits are trained and work to

Segregation violates principles of
American democracy
- Women should not be segre
gated in the United States mili
tary. Segregation violates some of
the basic principles of American
democracy.
First of all, segregation by race,
sex or crced is unconstitutional.
The Constitution of the United
States says that women are en
titled to all of the rights given to
men in our society.

Lastly, American democracy is
about doing away with inferior

The military constitutes a workplace
I don’t believe women should be
separated from men in the United
States military.
In the United States, it is illegal
to discriminate against women in
the workplace because of their gen
der. The United States military
constitutesa workplace and, there
fore, should be conducted like one.
Women should be able to perform
every task in the military on an
equal basis with men. In time of
war, they should also be on the
front line of fire along with men.
We do not need to recreate segre
gation in the United States military
by establishing separate training fa

of us who have forgotten, the segre-
Segregation in the military is pathetic
The proposal to segregate
women and men in the military is
a pathetic idea.
First of all, it is a naive attempt
to turn back the clock to a time
when women were considered to
be inferior, mentally as well as
physically, to men.
Secondly, it is a violation of the
spirit of the Declaration of Inde
pendence, and the Constitution of
Women should be held to the same
standard as men
If women want to be in the
United States military, they
should be held to the same stan
dard as men. They should be
granted all the privileges and re
quired to face the same rigor as
other military personnel.
Thoselegislatorsin Congress who
wish to segregate women in the
United States military are wrong.
The Constitution of the United
States does not permit this form of
segregation. This type of segrega
tion is just as bad as the racial
segregation the Supreme Courtde
clared unconstitutional in Brown
gation of races in the United States
armed forces did not promote equal
ity. It is naive to think that segregat
ing women and men in the United
States armed forces will.
Sexism is not a problem exclu

It is America’s problem. Eliminate
sexual harassment in American
society and it will be fumigated out
of our armed forces.
Sexual harassment as a problem
in the U.S. military will be solved
only when American men and
women learn to respect one an
other. Respect means seeing each
other as human beings and not as
sexual objects.

Although women have made
gigantic strides in the military,
we are not able to say that they
enjoy real equality. The Ameri
can military, for example, does
not permit women to serve as com
bat troopsin time of war. If women
are to become equal partners in
the military, this remnant of sex
ism and discrimination must be
removed. Instead of segregating
women, Congress should act to
make women more inclusive inits
armed forces.

Sexism has no place in American society
Some members of Congress con
tend that training segregated by
sex will provide women and men
with the necessary opportunities
to successfully become military
personnel. I fail to understand
their line of reasoning.
If women are immune to train
ing with male recruits, I fail to
comprehend how it will enable
them to perform their duties on
an equal footing. When entering
any job, people must learn how to
adjust to the attitudes of cowork
ers and how to work with the
opposite sex. Segregatingmen and
women recruits would rob them of
opportunities to overcome sexism,
the belief that women are infe
rior. Sexism is the main pillar of

sexual harassment in the mili

Segregating men and women
recruitsis also out of step with the
progress made by women in
American society. American
women constitute more than 50
percent of the work force of the
United States. Today, it is illegal
for American employers to dis
criminate against women because
of their gender.
Moreover, the Constitution of
the United States prohibits dis
crimination against women be
cause of their gender. Congress,
therefore, can not segregate
women in the armed forces of the
United States.
