[yson’s antics in the ring
shocked the sporting world
Mike Tyson, Mike Tyson!
Haven’t you experienced enough
mayhem in your boxing and per
sonal life? Aren’t you tired of
being placed in society’s hot-seat
by a rabid national media that
both despises you, and admires
you (depending on which way the
wind is blowing that particular
day). Mike, what were you think
ing? How could you place your
ire boxing career in jeopardy?
| you somehow forget that
wu're still on probation from that
2y Indiana prison you called
ve for afew years? Mure to the
point, why would you revert to
biting your opponent not once,
not twice, but a whopping three
tumes! Yes, those little nibbles
upon the neck and ears of reining
WBA Heavyweight Champion
"ander Holyfield may wind up

Mimeout
with Tony (! ‘
when he thought he was being
continually head-butted by
Holyfield. No matter what Mike
thought, his actions were unjusti
fied and down right barbaric. In
no way, shape or form does his
type of “retaliation” belong in box
ing specifically, or sports in gen
eral (although “biting” incidents
have occurred before in the world
of sports ... remember the NFL’s
resident dirty-player Conrad
Dobler?) This time, millions of
pay-per-view hostages around the
world had a ringside seat to wit
ness the munching incident.
Holyfieldislucky tohaveanyears
at all. Watching the incident in
AUGUSTAFOCUS JULY 3,1997
slow motion, you can clearly see
that Iron Mike had an iron clad
hold on Holyfield’s ear. How
Evander escaped more serious
damage is a true wonder, or mere
a living testament to his faithin a
higher power. >
Referee Mills Lane (a resident
of Savannah), had no choicebut to
stop the fight and disqualify Tyson
in the third round. Tolet the fight
continue would have been a big
ger sham. My question regarding
Lane’sactionsearlierin theround,
center around his reluctance to
stop the fight immediately upon
noticing that Tyson had nomouth
piece in place. If a mandatory
rule regarding boxers having
mouthpieces properly in place
duringboutsisn’t alreadyin place
in the professional ranks, then all
the alphabet soup governing bod
ies that oversee boxing, should
come together and rectify this
loophole in the safety guidelines
of the sport. This action would
hopefully avoid such poor behav
iorinthe ring during futurebouts.
But who knows ... rules are made
tobebroken. Isn’t that true, Mike
Tyson? And by the way, has any
one seen or heard anything from
boxing promoter Don King lately?
