TIPS FOR CONSUMERS from your Better Business Bureau What should you do when abusi ness closes? You take your TV to a repair shop, but when you return to pick it up, you find that the shop is no longer in business. What do you do when the company you’ve been doing business with or expect fur therservice fromhassuddenlygone out of business? Trying to locate a company that has gone out of busi ness can be difficult. Now we’ve stopped that, not only for this year, but more than likely for the next decade.” Qver 10,000 jobs have been cut at the Savannah River Site since the Clinton Administrationscameinto office in January, 1993. The Appropriations Committee has approved Norwood and Graham’srequest for an additional SBO million in funding for SRS en vironmental cleanup and canyon operations. Theincrease overturns an earlier Clinton Administration budget proposal that would have resulted in an estimated 1,000 lay offs at the site this fall. Thebudget approvals are astark contrast in employment outlook at the site compared to earlier this W88A.... In February, the CSRA was bracing for 1,500 layoffs scheduled for June, as a result of the Clinton Administration FY 98 Budget Pro posal. Norwood and Graham re sponded by pressuring DOE into postponing 1,000 of the layoffs un til after Congress had a chance to overturn the Administration’s planned $l2O million budget cut at thesite. The two Congressmenthen succeeded in rectoring SBO million to the site budget, with $47 million earmarked for canyon operations. DOE officials now say there will likely be no further reduction in SRS employment for the next de cade. Other DOE funding requests sub mitted by Norwood and approved by the committee include full fund ingrequests submitted by Norwood and approved by the committee include full funding of tritium pro duction and fissile materials dispo sition programs, and continued DOE research into superconduc tive electric cables. The funding requests are part of the Energy and Water Appropria tions Act of 1998, which will be voted on by the full House later this week.
