Competition building in home-improvement industry
(AP) There’s something build
ing in the home-improvement
market — competition.
In August, Lowe'’s opened a new
store across the street from The
Home Depot in Athens, to the east
of Home Depot’s headquarters.
Then Lowe’s opened a new store
inßtockbridge, to the south. Anda
store in Woodstock, to the north.
Within weeks, it will open for
business in Cobb County, to the
northwest, and Gwinnett County,

MOGADISHU, Somalia
(AP) Wild animals attacked vil
lagers marooned on small patches
of dry ground in flooded southern
Somalia, aid agencies reported Sat
urday.
Hyenas prowled at the edge of
the rapidly widening Juba River,
hunting human prey, the Ameri
can Refugee Committee reported.
Up to 10,000 people stranded in
the Hagar area, 280 miles south
west of Mogadishu, were compet
ing with animals for the same
stretches of high land, spokesman
Andrew Rosauer said.
Poisonous snakes and crocodiles
attacked villagers as they waded
through lakes, swamps and pools
created by the flood to get clean
drinking water. Waters around
Kolbio, near the Kenyan border,
were infested with hippos.
Aid agenciesreported that 1,311
Somalis have drowned since heavy
rains began in early October _ a
revised figure below an earlier es
timate of more than 2,000. An
other 227,914 people have been
forced from their homes by the
surging Juba and Shebelle rivers.
Relief workers fear famine and
epidemics will follow the flooding,
Somalia’s worst since 1961.
More than 14,000 livestock were
killed, and many surviving cows
and camels were stuck in mud,
surrounded by swarming black
clouds of parasites, according to
the U.N. Development Program.
Morethan 148,000 acresof crops
and farmland had been destroyed,
it said. Up to 10,000 tons of sor
ghum and other foods stored un
derground were washed away.
Many people are becoming ill
with malaria, respiratory infec
tions and diarrhea, the U.N.
Children’s Fund said.
Health officials also feared an
outbreak of cholera after at least
140 lavatories were damaged and
flooded. The disease, which is en
demic in Somalia, is spread by
contaminated feces.
Hospitals have lacked medicine
and supplies since Doctors With
out Borders pulled out of the area
six months ago when one of its
doctors was killed by militiamen
in the central town of Baidoa.
Somali factions in the Indian
Ocean port of Kismayo promised
UNICEF on Friday they would
not attack aid workers helping
flood victims. The same day, uni
dentified gunmen from other fac
tions kidnapped five aid workers _
who were not involved with flood
relief _ in the self-declared north
ern independent Republic of
Somaliland.
Warring factions have been vy
ing for control of Somalia, espe
cially in the southern and central
regions, since the country lost its
central governmentina 1991 coup.
Few countries are willing to help
Somalia in the aftermath of the
disastrous 1993 U.N. mission to
stop the famine, disease and civil
war that killed 350,000 Somalis in
1991-92.
The relief efforts, led by the
United States, ended in a debacle
18 U.S. soldiers were killed be
cause of fighting among clans.
In contrast to crises elsewhere
in which countrymen have helped
one another, some Somalis ex
ploited those in trouble.
In just one week, boat owners
raised the price for rescue from $6
per person to SIOO, radio reports
said. Commercial trucks that be
came stuck in mud while deliver
ingbadly needed sorghum andrice
toflooded areas were charged $l5O
to be towed.

Not exactly.
While keeping an eye on Lowe’s

Home Depot is busily carrying out
its own massive ion — a

While Tillman uses the Avis

to explain Lowe’s, it was in fact

eight years ago. But the Home

and well-trained helpers built a
national powerhouse that began
crowding out smaller competitors.
