VA hosts customer service seminar in January
AUGUSTA
Today’s front-line employee sets
the tone for the entire organiza
tion. If customers are to be served
and—more importantly—de
lighted, it will begin with that first
contact. The A VA Medical
tive Health Education Program
(CHEP), of Dublin, Georgia will
present “Helping Front Line Staff
Delight Your Customers.” Par

By Timothy Cox
UGUSTA FOCUS Correspondent
- Withtheclosingofthe 1997 NFL
n, it's appropriate that Tony
ngy, rookie coach of the Tampa
Buccaneers, would find him
self leading his ball club towards
the Super Bowl 1998,
In the mid
19705, Dungy
‘was a star
‘quarterback
‘with the Min
“nesota Go
“phers who,
like so many
“of his Black
'QB predeces
'sors, was later
‘“switched” to
‘defensive
‘'back. Dungy
“became a star
‘'with the
Pittsburgh
Kordell Stewart
typifies new
breed of black
quarterback
"'Steelers and later, a successful
;‘,defensive coordinator before be
'coming Tampa’s top man.
“In reflecting on NFL 1997, it
“‘should be recalled as the Year of
“the Black Quarterback. In the
“history of the NFL, never has so
"many men of color been chosen to
"control the helms of their respec
tive teams.
In Cincinnati, there’s Jeff Black;
Tony Banks of St. Louis Rams;
Steve “Air” McNair of the Tennes
see Oilers; Warren Moon of the
Seattle Seahawks; Rodney Pete of
Philadelphia Eagles; Randall
Cunningham of the Minnesota
Vikingsand Kordell Stewart of the
Pittsburgh Steelers.
With Stewart’s success in Pitts
burgh, it’salmost poeticjustice for
a city that had the first bonafide
Black starting QB. Old NFL fans
will forever recall the 1974-75 sea
son when “Jefferson Street” Joe
Gilliam of Tennessee State, led the
Steelers to a 4-1 record, only to be
lifted from the starting role in fa
vor of Hall of Famer Terry
Bradshaw.
For many Pittsburghers, it has
taken Stewart’s recent success to
counteract the sour taste of
Gilliams’ benching—over 20 years
ago.
This year has marked surpris
ing comebacks of the 41-year-old
Moon, who displayed great resil
iency and helped bring the
Seahawks back to respectability.
Just a week ago, Cunningham
showed he still has “the juice” by
helpinga Dennis Green-led Vikings
team finally advance in the play
offs. Only ayearago, Cunningham
was a retired TV football analyst
after a long career as the Eagles
signal caller.
Men like Marlin Briscoe (Dol
phins), James Harris (Rams) and
1988 Super Bowl MVP Doug Will
iams of the Redskins, are ones who
helplay the groundwork fortoday’s
starters. Their roles will never be
taken for granted. Other talented
types never made it big. Guys like
Charlie Ward, Tommy Frazier,
Tony Robinson, Willie Totten,
Andre Ware, Tony Rice, Thomas
Lott and many more.
Still, it’s nice to consider how far
the NFL has come when it comes
to providing men of color opportu
nities to work at other “skill” posi
tions besides running back and
widereceiver. Andbased on what’s
happening on the college ranks,
the future remains very bright for
the Black quarterback.
Happy
Holiday!
ing workshop will learn ways to
