“We want all of our students to
have broad, general preparation
before they make decisions about
specialization,” Dr. Rahn said.
“Our goal is not to force students
or residents into any particular
career pathways, but to ensure
that all of our program graduates
approach their professional endeav

centered perspective that recog

health and disease.”
To help insure that physicians

i ' When I want a sub, I go to Publix. They make my sub
the way I would if I was behind the counter, piling it
; high with the freshest ingredients. In fact it’s so big
Lt it’s like eating a whole meal. And they don’t skimp
‘ on anything, not even the pickles. Publix starts
E with their own freshly baked rolls. You can’t get
them anywhere else. Then the Deli associate picks the
E best meats. And I can choose from a wide variety of
managed care educational pro
grams. Under this program, 1:00
primary care residents wfl:gond
several daysat the Atlanta office of
Blue Crossand Blue Shield of Geor
gia, where they will learn about
managed care from the perspective
of the managed care organization.
They will be introduced to systems
for medical information manage
ment, quality management, physi
cian credentialing, and profiling
and utilization management. In
April, MCG and BCBSGA an
nounced a partnership -the Cen
ter for Healthcare Improvement --
thatenables the two organizations
to study the impact of managed
care on patient outcomes and the
cost of health care. This relation
ship also provides an educational
platform for physicians-in-train
ing to see a large, managed care
organization first hand, Dr. Miller
said.
“These programs and others de
veloped as part of the Generalist
Physician Initiative are true inno
vations for this campus and have
really resulted in a change in the
attitude on the part of students
and faculty toward primary care,”
he said.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foun
dation support is scheduled to end
after this latest two-year grant
period, but the initiatives in pri
mary care will continue at MCG,
Dr. Miller said. “These programs
arebeingintegrated intothe infra
structure of the School of Medicine
so that when the money from Rob
ert Wood Johnson is no longer
available, these programs will con
tinue through the support of the
de:ln ofthe School of Medicine,” he
said.
“This is the way our students
need to learn because this is how
they will practice. Even if they do
not go into one of the three pri
mary care disciplines, they will
have the knowledge of how these
disciplines work and how to work
with them.”
