King’s right to the veneration he

Love Me” and “Woke Up This
Morning.” A change of record
companies enabled a career re
think in the early sixties, and in
1964 King recorded “Live at the
Regal,” which is so strong it is
simply required listening for any
one with the faintest interest in
post-war blues: it was the first
time King had been recorded live,
and the first in a long time which
had him playing just his chosen
repertoire with his own band.
King has continued to broaden
his horizons -- his soul-influenced
album, Midnight Believer, re
corded with the help of members
of The Crusaders at the end of the
seventies, is a very superior effort
with his singing particularly well
caught - and even today contin
ues to thrill audiences with per
formances that are tellingly bal
anced between blues tradition and
the sounds of today.
The 8.8. King Blues Festival
will be held Thursday, Septem
ber 17,1998, at the Augusta-Rich
mond County Civic Center Arena,
at 7 p.m. 8.8. King will be per
forming with Dr. John, Delbert
McClinton, and Jimmy Vaughn.
Tickets $21.50, $26.50, and
$31.50. The Civic Center is lo
cated at 601 Seventh Street. For
