FIRE finesse
BWith new uniforms,
equipment and
management team,
the newly consolidated
fire department has a
new attitude as a
fire-fighting unit.

AUGUSTA
Recently, an old, abandoned
building caught fire in the neigh
borhood and I noticed something
different about how the fire de
partment went about their busi
ness.
What I noticed was a different
Richmond County Fire Depart
ment, from the trucks to the effi
ciency of the men. Ilater contacted
the fire department and was in
vited by Chief Ronnie Few to see
first hand the changes being made
'to the fire department.
. Among the new technology
changes was the purchase of new
‘hoses. “Why new hoses?”
' According to Chief Few, the old
‘hoses had to be cleaned and dried
before they could be used again. As
a result, trucks had to be pulled
from service in order to be reloaded
with new or clean hoses. The new
hoses, however, can be loaded back
on the truck and be ready for ser
vice without taking the truck out of
service. And although they can
still be handled by a single
firefighter, they have superior
knockdown power (they get more
water to the fire faster) than the
previous hoses. In addition, the
new hoses will save money because
they last longer. s
The department’s new: trucks
,ermit the firemen to dress on the
way to a fire and be ready for action
as soon as they arrive. The key is
that the seat backs are split with
the oxygen tanks built in and they
are wider.
Chief Few is awaiting the ar
rival of four new trucks. Each will
have a command center for a bat
talion fire chief, and provide better
communications to the dispatch
ers and Chief Few. The thermal
imaging equipment on the trucks
will enable firemen to see better —

.will also have foam capability,
#which ‘will smother a fire a lot
faster by depriving the flames of
oxygen.
Truck crews have been reduced,
from six men to three, and commu
nications with the fire service have
beenimproved among the dispatch
ers, who are now being trained in
speaking techniques and are all
taking courses on incident man
agement, and emergency medical
dispatching for firemen to assist
the injured. A newly established
training program has now been
put in writing. Engine companies
have been reassigned to different
areas of town to get the trucks on
“the scéne oz &é; lot quicker.
Also new e department will
be female firefighters, joining the
fire fighting ranks for the first time
in Augusta history. The depart
ment will be going to a universal
sleepwear for firefighters, to make
it easier for men and women to
handle fire fighting and living side

Surrey Center break-ins
catch store owners by surprise:
Sometime between 2 p.m. Sun
day and 5 a.m. Monday, five shops.
were broken intoin Surrey Center..
The Molinari Beauty Salon and
the Toy Box were burglarized dur-.
ingthat time, while Picklesand Ice;
Cream (a maternity shop), Tropi
cal Tan and Suzanne’s Flowers
reportedly were broken into but
had nothing stolen. In the two
shopsthat were burglarized, police
reports ‘indicate the only items
missing were coins left in the cash
register at one and coins in a jar at
the other shop. All five shops had
windows broken out by the
perpetrator(s). Representativesof
all five shops confirm that they
have never had problems of this
nature before in this shopping cen
ter. One shop owner stated in a
phone interview that the police
seem to feel the crimes were perpe
trated by one or more teenagers
looking for quick money. This
same shop owner expressed doubts
that the perpetrator(s) will be
caught. Another shop owner had
been in the process of purchasinga
new security system when the
break-ins occurred. Estimated
damages from the broken windows
averaged about SSOO per shop.
