Ask a sailor in today’s Navy why
they decided to enlist and you will
getavariety of answers. Some will
speak of the excellent schools avail
able and the money to continue
their education. Still others will
mention the chance to travel the
world and experiencedifferent cul
tures. But for John E. Brady, son
in-law of William Cobb of Augusta,
it was the call of the sea that
convinced him to try it.
“I was raised on a boat, so for as
long as I can remember the Navy
was always my plan,” said the 29-
year-old sailor.

Lorraine Morris has joined the
staff of the national office of the
Arthritis Foundation, as a direc
tor of public relations. Her . pri
mary areas of responsibility are
medical affairs and research. Prior
to joining the staff of the Arthritis
Foundation, she was director of
public relations for Paine College
in Augusta. In addition she has
(July 31 - Augusta 5).
The National Award is offered by
the PPA to state, regional, na
tional and international affiliated
organizations each year. First
made available in 1958, the award
recognizes those persons who gen
erously contribute their time and
talents to the service of their pro
fession,. their affiliated organiza
tion, and their fellow photogra
phers. Selections of the award are
determined by therecipient’s peers,

serves as an escort for aircraft
carrier battle groupsand amphibi
ous landing and transport ships.
It protects the ships form threats
above, on and below the surface of
the water.

dation is to support research to

Brady, an operations specialist,
plays a major role in the defense of
the ship. “I'm an air intercept
controller and anti-submarine con
troller. I use Navy fighters to
intercept enemy fightersand I use
helicopters to hunt submarines.”
Married to the former Melissa
Cobb of Augusta, with two chil
dren William, 10, and Kayla, 8,
Brady is sold on the Navy and
plans to complete his career.
“I’ll be 37 years old when I leave
(the Navy), so I'll get another job.
My goal is to retire at 57, play golf,
and have fun with my wife.”
Nomatter what his future holds,
Brady can look back on his Naval
service with fond memories and
the pride that comes with a job
well done.

Lew!s Labor Day Telethon. Chief Ronnie Few (pictured above)
led the Augusta Fire Department in raising over $51,000 to
