a threat to anyone but himself.
In the business of revolution —
which is still taken seriously by a
lot of people — a character like
Khalid Muhammad would be re
garded more as a part of the prob
lem than a part of the solution.
The government, in the past, al
lowed loose cannons like
Muhammad would be turned loose
in the community to sow confu
sion and incite the authorities to
adopt a passionate policy of in
creased repression. That’s exactly
what happened to the Black Pan
thers.
The truth is that America is
losing the culture war. In fact it
has already lost. The conserva
tive movement nothing more than
the expression of the emptiness
in the American cultural land
scape. Americans long ago aban
doned any spiritual or moral high
ground when it adopted Chris
tianity as a religion of convenience
the way it would adopt a whore as
a substitute for a help mate.

Khalid is slick enough torealize
that America pays its extremists
— and pays them well. What he
will learn is that America eventu
ally kills its black extremists. The
death need not be in the flesh — it
is just as effective in the economic
realm. But for now, Khalid is
challenging his mentor Louis
Farrakhan for the title of number
one bogeyman. It is a title that
Farrakhan is wise enough to let
slip from his shoulders.
To demonstrate how Khalid is
used as a weapon in the cultural
war, note this. Many white Ameri
cans dislike Khalid, it seems, be
cause he can say things they can’t.
The typical response is not really
fear of Khalid, but annoyance that
he can get away with his virulent
form of protected speech. The
confusion over Khalid reveals a
deep-seated contradiction in
American culture — on the one
hand, there’s the pretense of moral
purity and on the other hand
there’s the dilemma posed by a
crass, elitist fiction disguised as
Western civilization.

Distinguished parents receive coveted
parenting award at Disney World resort
OAK BROGK, ilincis
For many adults, the skills as
sociated with child-rearing are
among the toughest to learn. Yet,
no special training or manual
comes with the challenging job of
parenting. That's why hundreds
of families from across America
recently attended the 1998
McDonald’s National Parenting
Conference in Orlando, Florida.
Held at the Walt Disney World
(tm) Coronado Springs Resort, the
conference provided attendees of
all ages expert advice and insight
irito issues ranging from educa
tion and health to community in
volvement and other hot social
topics impacting children and
teens. Conference participants
also visited Animal Kingdom,
Disney’s newest theme park, fora
thrilling “Countdown to Extinc
tion” roller coaster ride in the
McDonald’s-sponsored Dino Land.
“McDonald’s is committed to
creating opportunities for children
and their parents to enjoy memo
rable family experiences,” said
Valerie Miles, senior marketing
manager, McDonald’s. “Through
sponsoring the National
Parenting Conference,
McDonald’s has the opportunity
to further support and educate
families and their communities,”
Miles said.
The conference featured re
nowned keynote speakers includ
ing author Earl Ofari Hutchinson,
Ph.D., who discussed Black Fa
therhood: The Guide to Male
Parenting. John Covey, Ed.D.,
director, Home and Family divi
sion of the Franklin Covey Insti
tute, discussed The Seven Habits
of Highly Effective Families. And,

Pointer’s dynamic testimony and
md:’l from her book entitled
Behind the Death of a Child up
lifted the audience with thought
provoking insight on overcoming
the loss of a child.
The conference culminated with
McDonald’s and Disney recogniz
ing adult role models at the
McDonald’s Parent’s Award Lun
cheon. “McDonald’s, Disney and
the founders of the National
Parenting Conference have the
same commitment — to provide
children and their parents the
tools they need to grow and flour
ish,” said Joe Woods, manager,
McDonald’s Communications.
Maisha Gibson, president and
co-founder of the National
Parenting Conference added,
“With children and families as
McDonald’s and Disney’s first
priority, it is only fitting that we
would partner with them to spon
sor this informational fun-filled
event. What'’s different about the
McDonald’s National Parenting
Conference is that it offers fami
lies one-stop shopping — nation
ally known keynote speakers;
youth, teen and adult workshops;
and best of all — a world-class
family vacation resort.
The conference culminated with
a special tribute to three extraor
dinary parent role models who
received a McDonald’s Parents
Award.
Ms. Paula Perkins, a foster par
ent who resides in Akron, Ohio,
received the Mother of the Year
Award. “Paula’s parenting skills
have proven effective and reward
ing and can be seen in her chil
dren through their own self-es
teem, behavior, and respect that
they show to others,” said Susan
As a former teacher, it's no
surprise Lozelle De Luz, Ph.D.,
helps prepare neighborhood
students for college. Although
she owns three McDonald's in
Wilmington, Delaware, she also
finds time to get involved in the
community on a state and
national level. Lozelle mentors
minority student athletes for
college and helps to feed the
homeless through annual
programs she helped establish
as External Vice President of the
National Black McDonald's
Operators Association. Her faith
in the potential of every person
makes a difference in the lives
of everyone Lozelle touches.

Mr. Abdullah Yazid Shakoor, of
Philadelphia, received the Father
of the Year Award. His wife,

“... to see him with my sons is just
unbelievable!! For example, Yazid
helps the children’s biological fa

carnival or wherever, sometimes
even giving him money so that he
can spend time with his sons.”
