Clean Money, Clean Elections rally to be held Sept. 22
Ovita Thornton of the Georgia
Rural Urban Summit believes
that: “There are some underlying
reasons why people are taking
advantage of not voting in the
United States of America.”
Until and through the 1988 and
1990 elections cycles, voter par
ticipation had declined by more
than 20 percent nationally and
more than 30 percent outside the
south. The modest upturnsin the
1992 and 1994 elections seemed
aberrations fueled by temporary
voter anger rather than a harbin
ger of renewed and lasting com
mitment to civic engagement.

They include: Chad W. Carrick

series entitled Intimate Strang
ers - Unseen Life on Earth for
National Public Television. Chris
Courter, Brian Hewett, and Jeff
Thomas were involved in an epi
sode entitled “Creators of the
Future,” which shot footage in
and around Aiken and the Sa
vannah River Site. The series
was designed to transform pub
lic perception and understand
ing of microbes.
Five ASU students were se
lected by Georgia Power/South
ern Company to participate in
an Impact Energy Conference in
Peachtree City during August.
They were Lawanna Monday, a
biology major; Marcia Poo Garcia,
Spanish major; John Jenkins, an
English major; Rebecca Shealy,

Four ASU students placed in
the top eight at the national Phi
Beta Lambda leadership confer

mer, after securing their spots
earlier in state conference. The

This situation is particularly
acute among the young. The ero
sion of democracy at the
grassroots is not limited to the
young. Inthe 1994 election alone,
there was a 21 percent decline in
participation of those with in
comes under $15,000. (Social
Policy Vol. 26 No. 1/Fall 1995)
Eligible voters have been typi
cally stereotyped as lazy, disloyal
and apathetic. But maybe there
is another side of the coin. Maybe
these voters feel totally disen
franchised and disengaged from
the political process.
So what or who is the real bar
