WNBA player announces first national
basketball camp for women

Harris Fantasy Camp, the first
ever national basketball camp for
women, ages 256 and up. For five
weekends in five cities during Oc
tober and November, female
hoopsters will get the chance to
honetheir skills, compete, and meet
some of their female hoop idols.
Camp instructors will include
WNEBA and ABL players as well as
coaches from the pro and college
ranks.

Fran Harris Fantasy Campkicks

Washington, D.C., Los Angeles,
Phoenixand Houston. Eachcamp
is limited to 300 women. During
the first week of May 1998 more
than 3,000 women ages 22-66 at
tended local WNBA tryouts in 10
different cities. Last year, more
than 70 million people watched the
WNBA season and another 1.1.
million attended games. Also in
1997, more than 80 million women
and girls played basketball world
wide, and the number of women
players has increased 26 percent
since 1991.
According to Fran Harris,
FHFC founder, author, entrepre
neur, and ESPN sports commen
tator, these camps are about more
than basketball. “These camps

ture of her camps was a deliberate
attempt to attract athletes like her
mom (whoisdeceased); she wanted
to thank them for making her hoop
dreams come true. “I truly feel
that the pre-Title IX women made
this (WNBA) possible and these
camps give us the chance to show
our gratitude. FHFC is as much
for the woman who'strying toland
a spot in one of the pro leagues, as
it is for that baby boomer who
perhaps was not encouraged to
play or who didn't have the oppor
tunity for scholarships, or the
woman who simply loves the game
and wantsnothingmore than tobe
around other women who love it.
“I'm really excited,” Harris said.

she did the job two times better
than the men that went before
her.”
