ment our heritage. Its crucial
that our children understand; its
important that all children un
derstand simpler times.” Webb’s
simpler times encompass a child
hood where she picked tomatoes
from a yard garden, and united
with womenfolk as they joyfully
cooked in sweltering hot kitch
ens. “There was a cohesive bond
ing that transpired in the neigh
borhood through the church,
through the shared chores and
responsibilities, and even the com

time. Today, we are eating on the
run; we are feeding our children
canned biscuits; hence we forget
the customs that mold our cul
ture.” Webb’s works resuscitate
days goneby, and documents what
she views as the “common
threads” that bind all cultures:
the zest for survival, love for fam
ily, and the jubilation of social
and spiritual intimacy.
Though she is world traveled,
Webb’s solid foundation was
seeded on humble Southern tra
dition. Born in Atlanta, Georgia,
she spent her childhood in Cleve
land, Ohio where she was
mentored by a host of stalwart
role models, including the family
matriarch, her grandmother.
With the aid of scholarships, she
graduated from the Cleveland
Institute of Art in 1971, earning
her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree
in Graphic Design and Illustra
tion. She initiated her master’s
degree at Georgia State Univer
sity, as she simultaneously mas
tered silkscreening at the Gilbert
House and Atlanta College of Art.
