image of black college football —
specifically, the bands.
With a racord crowd of 51,726
fans turning out to see these long
time rivals (38 meetings), the
Georgia Dome was theideal venue
for the annual Atlanta Football
Classic. The game, wich is spon-
sored by 100 Black Men of At
lanta, saw FAMU’s Rattlers edge
TSU’s Tigers 31-23.
In reference to image restora
tion, a week prior to the Atlanta
game, a contest between Prairie
View and Southern University,
ended with a literal battle of the
bands. After a number of band
members were injured when the
musicians clashed in a mid-field
fight, the encounter drew national
headlines and coverage on net
work TV news programs and
CNN.
Meanwhile, the battle of the
bands in Atlanta was expectedly
won by the green and orange
marching machine from Tallahas
see. FAMU’s band is a perennial
powerhouse and ofl!::'ed an
expectedly exciting show. While
the game was obviously erkioyed
by the many alumnists who con
verged on one of the nation’s pre
mier indoor arenas, it was the
halftime show which brought
down the proverbial house. And
give TSU’sband and dancing girls
credit for a solid performance.
As a former college marching
band member who grew up in the
North, but influenced by the
Grambling Tiger Band, this re
porter especially enjoyed halftime.
Years ago, when black college
bands made rare national TV ap
pearances, shows were usually
voiced-over with analysts and
halftime statistics - robbing view
ers of the real showtime experi
ence.
The 100 Black Men committee
should be commended for orches
trating a wonderful event void of
violence or anything detrimental
to the game's participants and
attendees. It was a wonderful
time for a crowd sprinkled with
diverse age groups.
(EDITOR’S NOTE: The CSRA
Classic of Augusta, continues the
black college football tradition
with a Saturday, Oct. 24 matchup
between the Morris Brown Wol
verines and the Morehouse Ma
roon Tigers. For more informa
tion, call 724-7855.)
