Peach Care for Kids announces
“Sign Up Day” in hospitals
Peach Care for Kids is finally
here! On Wednesday, December
16, hospitals throughout Georgia
will be hosting a “Sign Up Day”
for the program. In Augusta, a
representative for Peach Care for
Kids will be available at Colum
bia-Augusta Medical Center from
9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to hand out
applications, answer parents’
questions about the program, and
help them fill out the one page
application. If people are not able
to come on that day or during
those hours, they may contact
Diana Zenewicz at 651-6122 for
additional information and an ap
plication.
Peachcare for Kids began en
rollment statewide on December
1, following a pilot test conducted
in the Macon area this fall. This
new program, which offers a full
range of health care for minimal
cost, was created specially for
working-class Ga. families: par
ents who are independent and
self-sufficient, but who cannot
afford to purchase private insur
ance for their children.
Cindy Woodard can attest to
the personal benefits for
Peach Care for Kids. Her son,
Chris, 12, was enrolled in the
program during the Macon pilot.
Since then, he’s been to the doc
tor for his allergies, and he’s had
his vision examined — with sur
prising results. “He was com
plaining his eyes hurt when he
read alot,” says Cindy. “We went
to the eye doctor, he got checked
out, and we got to the bottom of
it.” Chris now has a prescription
for bifocals: exactly the sort of
everyday preventive care that all
children deserve, but many can’t
afford.

lies, Chris’ father works for a
small company that doesn’t
qualify for groupinsurancerates.
“Now I know when I need totake
Chris to the doctor, cost won’t be
afactor,” Cindy says. Peach Care
for Kids offers the same range of
services as private insurance pro
grams, including doctor’s visits,
eye and dental exams, and acci
dent coverage. And the cost is
minimal: only $7.50 per month
per child, with amaximum of sls
per month per family. Kids under
six are covered free, and there are
no deductible or co-payments.
Of course, as any parent will
confirm, health insurance is not
just a financial issue. For tens of
thousands of Georgia parents,
Peach Care for Kids offers a safety
net: a promise that their child
will be taken care of should he get
sick or hurt. “Now I can have the
peace of mind,” Cindy states, “to
take him places and get him the
care he’s needed all these years.
Now I don’t have to worry.”
Application forms are immedi
ately available by calling toll
free, 1-877-GA PEACH (1-877-
427-3224.) In addition, parents
may pick them up at other loca
tions such as hospitals and county
health departments.
In preparation for the state
wide launch, outreach briefing
sessions were done with over 500
non-traditional and traditional
community channels across the
state from churches and social
services organizations to health
care providers. These community
organizations will also helpreach
eligible families and get them
enrolled.
The application form is just one
page, clear and easy to read. It
can be mailed in and no office
interview is necessary. Benefits
for the program begin January 1,
1999, statewide. Parents may
choose from over 4000 Georgia
Better Health Care program phy
sicians, or one can be assigned to
them when they enroll. Addition
ally, in some areas HMO plans
will be providing care. Once en
rolled, parents will be issued a
Peach Care for Kids insurance
card, which they should present
at the doctor’s office at the time of
service.
To qualify for Peach Care for
Kids, families can make up to
twice the Federal poverty level.
For a family of four, that’s an
annual income of roughly $32,900.
The amount could be even higher,
however, dependingon the num
ber of family members working,
as well as other family expenses,
such as child care payments. Ga.,
ranking in the top ten for unin
sured children, created Peach Care
for Kids as a totally separate pro
gram from Medicaid, although it
is administered through the same
state agency, the Department of
Medical Assistance (DMA.) The
Peach Care for Kids outreach ef
fort will identify and enroll more
than 100,000 children in Ga. cur
rently falling into the crack be
tween private health insurance
and Medicaid eligibility.
The Peach Care for Kids pro
gram has been hailed by the
Children’s Defense Fund as one
ofthe top plansin the country —
notable for its comprehensive
community outreach effort.
Peach Care for Kidsis the state’s
Children’s Health insurance
(CHIP,) which takes advantage
of matching federal fund avail
ability duringthe next five years
to address the problem that over
10.6 million children nationally
have no health insurance.
