Heritage Crest to be
nveiled at Smithsonian
C AUGUSTA
‘The “World Symbol of Unity,” the Heritage
rest, will be officially unveiled at the
mithsonian Institution’s Hirshhorn Museum
n Friday, January 29, 1999, as part of a
orldwide tour launched by the Society of the
eritage Crest. The event is hosted by the
mithsonian’s Anacostia Museum and Cen

Dr. John Hope Franklin, chair of the
esident’s Initiative on Race; Rev. Jesse
ackson, national president of the Rainbow/
USH Coalition; former President Jimmy
arter; Rev. Dr. Cameron Alexander, presi
ent of the Georgia Missionary Baptist Con
ention; and Xernona Clayton, one of the first
lack women to successfully “break through
he glass ceiling” in the television industry’s
hanagement ranks, will be presented the
feritage Crest Visionary of Unity Award dur
ng the unveiling ceremony. The awards
ecognize those whose mission is the pursuit
f racial unity.

vhich incorporate symbols and designs that
re significant to these groups. The Society of
he Heritage Crest has developed a series of
rests that together, tell the collective story

ares, emphasize the common heritage and
ride of all people, and that serves as a cohe
ive symbol of world unity.
‘The African-American crest will be the first
f the Heritage Crest series to be unveiled at
he Smithsonian. As the tour progresses, the
fpanish, Jewish, Asian and Native American
ests will be unveiled.
“Charles Walker Jr., 30-year-old chair and
punder of the Society of the Heritage Crest,
ias selected by President Bill Clinton to serve
i the first White House conference on hate
rimes, during which Walker introduced the
Heritage Crest as a symbol to unify and com
bat hate.
' The Heritage Crest has been endorsed by
he Southern Christian Leadership Confer
bnce (SCLC), the National Baptist Conven
lion USA, as well as the chairs of the National
Rssociation for the Advancement of Colored
people (NAACP), Promise Keepers, National
[Jrban League and Rainbow/PUSH Coalition.
‘Walker states, “The Heritage Crest reminds
hs that all people face adversity and that
rivmph of the Word (spirit) is what unifies

ments to survival and faith.”
“From John 1:14 comes the premise that
br common heritage is our spirit. ‘ln the
pginning, was the Word.” There is no unity
putside of the Word (spirit).”
Steve Harvey, popular comedian and tele
sision actor, is one of the national spokesper
bons for the Society, and will assist in raising
wareness and meaning of the Crest across
he country, and urban communities, in par
icular. The Society’s board will grant licens
ng rights to select corporations to use the
prest insignia as a seal of approval to signify
their appreciation of all peo{)le, regardless of
solor. The Crest will be displayed as a symbol
0. the consumer that their purchase of a
particular quality product, or their participa
ion in g particular event, directly supports
he Society’s causes. A significant percent
ze of all funds generated from sales of li
enses or co-branded products will support
sharities and community organizations that
ddress family, health, education, housing
nd crime issues. :

PTAs held a competition
among all Richmond county
school children from grades
1 to 12 in the visval arts,
music, photography, and
literature. Schools invoived
in the competition Were
Barton Chapel, Blythe,
Copeland, Craig, C.T. Walker,
Davidson Fine Arts, Forest
Hills, Hephzibah Middle,
Jamestown, National Hills,
Roy Rollins, Spirit Creek,
Tobacco Road, Warren Road,
Wesiside and Windsor
Springs. In addition to certifi
cates of achievement, prizes
ranged from tickets to the
Augusta Symphony to gift
certificates from Borders

Augusta Fire Chief Ronnie Few presents the “Good Samari
tan” award to Alex Hammond, Jr. and David Calhoun who
pulled wheelchair-bound Jim Pontoon out of his burning
home on Januvary 19, 1999. The fire started when a grand
child was playing with fire around a space heater. Mr.
Pontoon was unable to get out of the house on his own.
When firefighters arrived, the home was fully engulfed with
flames and smoke. The two men were treated for smoke
inhalation. Their act of bravery is commendable. The men
pulled Mr. Pontoon out of the house just in time. Mr.
Hammond and Mr. Calhoun are Augusta’s first recipients of
“The Good Samaritan Award” for 1999 ° Photo by Charles Jones
